I want to be able to identify the trees of canoe country including the boreal forest better. Is there a book recommendation for me? I know there are several but I'd like some reviews first, thanks!

While not the book you're looking for, we've been very pleased with the Virginia Tech Tree ID app . It covers North America, and for each species the app shows leaf, flower, fruit, twig, bark, entire tree, and map photos. Easy to search, etc, and comes at my favorite price.

Plants of the Quetico by Shan Walshe. Trees, shrubs, flowers, sedges, grass. A really good guide.

I agree that Shan's book is wonderful...if you can find one for sale. It addresses plant communities which is a better learning experience all around. I carried this book with me on trips for years.

If you just want trees this is good:

trees only

This gives you all the woody vegetation; trees, shrubs and woody vines:

All woodies

This one is a little pricey, but it would be my choice. Shrub diversity in the BWCA is probably greater than tree diversity. It would be a much more interesting book to have in the field.

These would also be useful in other parts of the state.

"Canoe Country Flora: Plants and Trees of the North Woods and. Boundary Waters," by Mark Stensaas. There are 13 trees described in the book. Illustrations are black & white drawings rather than photographs. Each entry has between 2-4 pages describing identifying characteristics, habitats, natural history, etc. The book covers some 96 species of trees, shrubs, flowers, ferns, and fungi in an informative and entertaining fashion.

Stan Tekeila is a author, naturist, and photographer. He has an entire collection of field guides. What I like about Stan's field guides are they are simple with excellent photos. His field guides are very small, packable, and lightweight and so easy to toss into your pocket or pack.
