Since I am basically locked down in my house (except for skiing), I thought I would post. I thought I would reach out to all the American canoeists who use to inhabit this site. I wish you and yours a fantastic holiday despite Covid and the best for 2021. With any luck you will be in Q next summer and I will be in Maui next winter.

I apoligize in advance if this has been posted before but I just finished reading an insane canoeing adventure. If any of you are bored at home you might find it interesting. The book written by Adam Shoalts is called Beyond the Trees. He describes his four month solo canoe trip from the Yukon to Hudsons Bay across the Canadian Tundra. I could empathize with many of his problems but couldn't fathom some of the others. I have done many three week solo trips but the thought of a four month trip is staggering. The comitment to continue is beyond belief and basically gives me hope for the human spirit.

John,
Thanks for the kind words and good wishes. We had permits for Quetico 2020 for late August/early September, but of course had to cancel. Our typical trip is 10 days and 100-125 miles; we're planning the same trip for 2021 if vaccines and other COVID responses open the border.

Like you, we're not traveling, but we manage to get out of the house for hikes on local trails, usually during the week when trail traffic is minimal. Here's to an end to COVID, to open borders, and to worry-free paddling trips and other recreation. Have a fantastic holiday season, and may 2021 smile on us all.

TZ

PS: Thanks for the book recommendation--I'll check it out.

Thanks John. Lots of temporarily displaced Q paddlers have had to get their fix somewhere else, and I'm one of them (along with my son and paddling buddies). Looking forward to seeing Quetico again in 2021 - I hope.

Also, when the border opens, I'll likely be taking a business trip to Calgary. Hope to get together for dinner and/or a beer when I'm in town.

Thanks, John, for your sentiments. I hope that you, too, have a wonderful holiday. Thanks for the book recommendation. I am so looking forward to the border opening, presumably, in 2021.

Thanks much for the book recommendation. That looks like a great read. And I wish you a good new year as well and I hope you end up in Maui next winter as well.

I just finished reading "The Old Ways: A journey on Foot" by Robert Macfarlane. The author hikes different paths throughout the world and reflects on the history, meaning, and inner journey each path brings up for him.

Hope all my fellow Q dreamers are safe and healthy, and I hope we can get back into the park this year.
