I wish I could say retirement or grandbabies but it’s a bit too soon for either of those (thank goodness) so I’m looking forward to another MR340 race in July followed shortly thereafter by the Wisconsin Drifty 250. These are 2021 goals to strive for....see “New Years Resolution, anyone?” topic.

The first time I went through chemo, which makes everything uncertain, we developed this principle: we don’t make plans, we recognize possibilities. I feel like things are too uncertain in the world to make plans but I will recognize the possibility of seeing my mother, of getting to the BW from California, and of seeing friends to play squash.

I have a goal of doing the last day of RAGBRAI.
This coming March will be 2 yrs from my hip replacement gone bad. Staph infection . I had 4 replacements in 4 months . 3 in 3 weeks and 2 in 3 days...
Lost some mobility.
Didn't stop me just slowed me down

Still got in 3 boat trips to the bwca. 1 may 1 june 1 Aug.

I even got the bug and beat it.
Over all, I'm a pretty lucky guy.
I had to use 2 canes as I walked to my deer stand this year.

My son and I have decided to give the Border Route Challenge a go this year, which will be his senior year in high school. Cleared it with his school, planning some training schedules, and hope to squeeze two BWCA trips in this summer. Also hoping to visit family in Portland OR, and maybe send my daughter to wrestling camp. So, more than anything, I'm looking forward to that vaccine! Holding out hope.

I'd like to shed my 2020 20. It wouldn't be so bad if not for the 2019 19.

01/03/2021 06:19PM
I expect that the first half of 2021 will be similar to 2020. In that half of the year I hope to be vaccinated and continue canoeing on local lakes. By fall, I think there will be some chance that the border with Canada will open. If so, Quetico here I come. An Okefenokee canoe trip might be on in October or November. The winter of 2020 might see more standard tourist stuff to FL and AZ. Now, the summer of 2022 hopefully will offer lots of possibities, BWCA, Quetico, WCPP and overseas travel. Now that would be nice, to be faced with more things than you can do, as opposed to all the things you can't. I retired this year into a world of limited possibities. I hope to be able to makeup for lost time in 2021 and beyond.

I manage a busy grocery store and have interacted with hundreds of employees and thousands of customers every day since the beginning of the pandemic. My wife and daughter both work in the same store and I admit to a level of concern and foreboding during this pandemic. But so far so good. I am looking forward to getting myself vaccinated as an at risk person in the near future(age, physical condition and employment) and my family as soon as possible after that. I think I will have a bit more peace of mind after that. I can wear a mask as long as it is necessary but hoping for a bit of normal by summer.

As far as trips, I took 2 last year and planning on two or more this year. Canada border isn't a big thing for me, the BWCA does me just fine. I get the finer points of a Quetico trip versus a BWCA trip but the additional expense and complication just isn't worth it for me, plus I have a tripping partner who has some barriers to that.
We have managed to have great trips with good scenery...wildlife...good fishing and pretty good solitude the last several years in the BWCA. Think it depends somewhat on when and where you go in.

Aside from Covid we have had a dear stepmother pass and serious medical issues with both of our daughters - they are both living with us right now out of necessity. We had just short of a year of being empty nesters and were liking that just fine, but you do what you have to do.

I am not sad to see 2020 go, can't think of a worse year in my recollection(not even counting the political and social issues that haven't helped).

I am hoping 2021 is the year to move past all of this and get back to life as we knew it not that long ago. Retirement for me will happen at some point this year and I approach that with both excitement and trepidation - think I am ready financially, think I am ready emotionally...we shall see.

Wishing all of you a year filled with adventure, good health and prosperity.

Looking forward to in 2021? (I might have said Canoecopia, but that isn't happening.)

Getting the COVID vaccine ASAP. Spartan1 getting the COVID vaccine, when they decide that it can be given to transplant recipients. Those are the #1 concerns and they will affect anything else we want to do. I hope EVERYONE will get the vaccine, because until they do we will be at high risk, even if we get ours.

And we want to enjoy a cabin week at Rockwood Lodge the last week of June with our granddaughter, who will have finished her first year of college. We want to be able to see our two children, our two children-in-law (haven't seen these two for more than a year now), our grandson. Hope to plan a fun "grandchild vacation" with our grandson as well.

Staying healthy and keeping up with my daily exercise regimen.

Spartan football in the stadium and hosting the family Thanksgiving here. Going to church instead of watching online--maybe even directing the church choir again. Spending lots of time at our lake cottage in southwest Michigan.

Most of these are just "normal" things. I hope some of "normal" will return in 2021, although I know it won't be back to the way it used to be pre-pandemic.

I'm looking forward to having a home again. I've been living in a motel since September and even that went bad when its water pump quit, so for the past five days, I've been sleeping on the floor of the reno. I've also looking forward to the vaccine. Paddling seems so far away.

Good thoughts, yogi. Glad to hear you've pushed through all the BS and still been able to do what you do.

I'm looking forward to a couple BWCA trips, hopefully a Quetico trip, and hopefully a Lac Seul trip with my old man that's been in the works since 2018. My wife's 30th is coming up on January 10th and she's always wanted to go to South Africa to swim with the great whites...obviously that isn't happening. I don't know how to make that up to her. Deep breaths and high hopes, friends

A return to normalcy. Whatever that may be.

An end to the virus.

No more masks.

Being able to take a BW trip. Probably won't happen though, so I'm not getting my hopes up to much on that one.

Having a family gathering.

Traveling out of state would be nice, taking a family vacation. Minnesota is great but I miss the mountains and the oceans.

On a daily basis I'm most looking forward to a return to my office. Earliest possible date will be July, not holding my breath. I always thought it'd be so great to work from home. There are advantages, to be sure. But I miss my colleagues who, it turns out, were some of my closest friends in a practical sense.

I hope the border opens but my next Canada trip is already pushed to 2022 at earliest. Lots of time to research. Nipigon brookies better be ready for the gopher and his kid!

Like many I'm most looking forward to getting the vaccine. I'm just outside the priority age group so I'm trying to look at that as a good thing. Right now my window looks to be sometime in the July-December timeframe. Sheesh. I'd love to be able to go to the YMCA regularly again, it's open but I'm trying to play it safe. It's been a mild winter in SW Michigan so far so I'm grateful that I've been able to continue paddling locally.

Missmolly, how were you able to even sell your house?? That's a terrible story, and I feel for you.

The second to last week of glorious 2020 my landlord of 6 years told me he his selling my shack, my bachelor pad I finally got figured out, next Tuesday I broke up for good out of a bad relationship of 2 years, the following Friday my company I’ve been working for 10 years told me they are going out of business. So in a week I lost my job, my gf, and a roof over my head. Gotta love it.

Got a job by 9 am the following Monday after a 5 minute phone conversation, which was amazing now that I think of it, same gig, much better company, I’m moving into a penthouse suite above an insurance co in beautiful downtown Lake Villa Feb 1st, going to get a new truck and find a real nice woman to be with and adore. Save my dough and slice out my little slice of happiness in this crazy world. That’s the plan.

Life is good!

As always Cheers! scat

I sold it by slicing $100,000 off the selling price and selling it in a market where houses were selling sight unseen, purchased by NYCers at the start of the pandemic. I was required by law to inform the buyers of the situation, but I would have done that anyway. Thanks for the compassion. I'm writing from the motel and going to the new house today to start rehanging some doors, but it's months away from habitability.

Oh man, good luck. I am packing and purging all unnecessary items. Going minimalism to the maximum. Anyone need 4 boxes of 20 year old fishing magazines or want to buy my beer can collection. I think I can part with them at this point. I’ll keep my 300 forty year old albums I guess.

Just found a 2 story custom habitrail gerbil cage and a half a bucket of cedar chips. Maybe I should keep that. Get a gerbil and one of those plastic balls and let him run around the new crib running into walls and whatever else gerbils do. My son had a gerbil. His name was Gerby. We once brought back a baby turtle from BW. His name was Turtle. Just remembered, I have a turtle tank too.

Last year was only the second year in ten I didn’t spend at least one night on Frost Lake. My dog has been with me every time.

She’s starting to show her age, so getting up there this year again is what I’m looking forward to. Not sure she’ll be up for it in 2022.

Spartan2 - thanks for the nice thought! I think I zoned in on my next truck, an Isuzu Trooper. My GMC Sierra just passed 300,000 and I’ll keep her for work and the rack on top to haul boats around, but she is getting a tad rough in the body anymore to be a cruiser for all the hot dates I am planning on having. My line always was, well honey, this isn’t the sexiest car I guess, the sexiest thing about this car is you in the passenger seat... This will get you a smile every time but you can only use that line once unfortunately. Time to upgrade.
Not a car guy, I’m more hammer and nails, sawdust mud and blood, so I hope this car works out. It looks like a good deal, so I’m gonna buy it and keep movin on. That’s all we can do. Cheers! scat

I'm looking forward to our BW trip. We haven't decided on what EP yet, but it really doesn't matter which one, as long as we can go.

I'm also really hoping our daughters wedding can occur as planned. She has put so much time and effort into it, she says its like having a second job! It's not like she planning a huge party - only 100 people ( 3/4 are close family cuz both my husband and I come from large families). But the wedding will be in WI and she's living in VA, and her brother is in ID, and most of my husbands family is in IA, so a lot of travel is involved. So a lot of stress and worry with covid still everywhere.

And we'd like to take a trip to visit our son in Idaho too. We haven't been to that state yet.

And I'd like to go out for a Friday fish fry! I'm tired of doing dishes!

Retirement. Sold my share of the practice Jan. 1. Working my same schedule right now so as not to stress others during these busy months but on June 1st it will be no more night calls, weekends or holidays. I know too many tearer-downers. That approach to human interaction/treatment never made sense to me. Let's focus on boosting our fellow men and women's self-confidence. You never know the s*** someone might be trudging through in their current life. A genuine smile and compliment can go a long way.

-Taking a trip in may with my 2 best dudes and my brother (my oldest best dude).

-Paddling/fishing locally with my 9 year old, with the goal of being ready to take her on a trip in 2022.

-Doing more state park hiking and camping on the weekends. I worked something like 40 saturdays (my normal shift is monday-friday) last year, so we didn't get out as much as we would have liked.

-Spending a lot of time at my grandparents' cabin in NW WI. Precovid we didn't go very much because we have young kids and there aren't a ton of options in that area to take the kids and go do stuff, but with covid around it's great because it's not like there are a ton of options anywhere to take the kids and go do stuff, so they're content to build fairy houses in the woods and swim.
