Anyone have experience getting a leatherman tool repaired or replaced? I’ve got a 22 year old basic PST that is just a train wreck. It’s pretty filthy, the tip of the awl is gone, and the smallest screwdriver is significantly bent. That’s all my fault—- but today the tip of one side of the pliers snapped off so now it’s basically a cool paperweight with a dull knife :)

For kicks I went on leatherman’s website and they claim to have a full 25 year warranty. I filed a claim and am shipping it off to them, but I’m curious to know if others have had success getting these claims resolved to their satisfaction?

I have sent several Leatherman tools in for warranty with broken blades, saws, etc. and had them fixed with no questions asked. Biggest set back is paying for shipping on the cheaper tools.

I returned a Leatherman Juice CS4 from which I'd snapped a plier jaw (don't ask). It was replaced, rather than repaired, and remains my multi-tool of choice.

I had a great experience with their warranty. I sent in a Skeletool with a broken pliers (misused). They assessed it and sent me a virtual gift certificate to replace it. The whole process took about a week. I was clear that the pliers broke through misuse, but it didn't seem to matter.

Thanks all! Sounds like overwhelmingly positive experiences. I’m hoping for a refurbished unit in return. Some of the newer tools look pretty impressive but I really like the old school basic PST for my needs.

My PST was confiscated by TSA on my way to Honduras. I bought two replacement being sold on e-bay as "TSA confiscated multi-tool". I like the basic functions.

This is good to know. I have the original Leatherman that needs some help and a newer wave that also needs help.

Does anyone know if they would repair or replace the leather carrying case for the original?

“This warranty does not cover accessories, sheaths (exception: Ainsworth Sheath is covered by a 2-year warranty), imprinting, color finishes, cleaning, or sharpening. Any of the aforementioned will not be returned to sender with the exception of the Ainsworth Sheath.”

I bet you can order a replacement sheath though.

Do you have to register your tool to get the warranty?

There should be a 4 digit code inside the handle —MMYY. If it’s within 25 years you’re set. They didn’t ask for any proof of original ownership or anything from me.

Thanks for the info.

I got a black oxide wave off ebay on the cheap, was going to use it for parts but asked leatherman if they'd repair it....they did and it's as good as new

My Leatherman Pulse is an '0900.' It's been lost more than a few times... left behind in a buddy's shop, on a random shelf at work, on the ice (drove 2 miles across the lake in the dark to retrieve it that time... Each occurrence, I had given it up for good but it tore me up that it was gone. It's discontinued and other replacement models just didn't quite do it for me. eBay sellers want way too much for it, too. Thanks for the warrantee info.

Thought I would report back on this. Filled out the online warranty request Jan 9th. Shipped in my ragged 22-year-old PST with 3 pieces broken and today I received a like-new refurbished Rebar. Pretty much 3 weeks from start to finish, that's with today's slower USPS service times. I'm thoroughly impressed. The replacement product is a step up for sure. Not having a saw was my biggest beef on the PST, and why I often left it in favor of a Swiss Army knife. The Rebar has a decent little saw AND a serrated blade, which is a nice bonus. It's also noticeably easier to get the tools out, and the lock and release function is a big improvement as well.

Round of applause for Leatherman standing behind their product. Best part: I get a new 25-year warranty starting now :)

Caution! I sent in my old Leatherman to have the file replaced. I used a USPS flat rate box, postage was $8.30. The box according to Leatherman was received opened with no tool inside. Leatherman sent me pfds of the damaged box and a letter detailing how to make a claim to the USPS. I'm not blaming anyone in particular but the tape had been cut and the sides pried open, not an accident. Leatherman tools are valuable (mine was valued at appox.$120.00). be sure to insure yours. I will be seeing our local postmaster later today but don't have a good feeling about the outcome.
What really pisses me off was this was a gift and has been on my belt for over 20 years. Just a rant.

Boy, that's really is bad luck. I'm sort of surprised they didn't offer you a refurbished replacement or something. Obviously it's not their fault but would have been a nice gesture. But agreed, insurance is pretty cheap, especially on stuff like that, with sentimental and monetary value....always worth it.

Having worked in a warranty dept once long time ago: You might want to question the spirit of the warranty. Your Leatherman had a good life. And it’s time for a new one. The spirit of the warranty is for a defective product.

You will probably get a brand new one from them. But ask your moral compass before you send it in.

That’s ridiculous. 25 years is 25 years. The pliers tip snapped 10 years ago. If I had proactively sent it in in at 12 years instead of waiting for other things to break and finally sending at 22 years, would that be better?

Moral compass? Unreal.

I get what you're saying but you can't talk the talk if you're not going to walk the walk. I think Leatherman grew their reputation based on their robust tools, usefulness, and warranty, which is prominent on their packaging and in most cases in the image of a badge.....
If my new truck breaks down near the end of the 5 year warranty I do still expect it to be covered. It was a factor in the purchase after all......and I hope your warranty department honored their end of their agreements too.
One could argue nobody has a moral compass more broken than a provider not willing to make good on what they have advertised/sold.

Don't get mad at me since In your original pot you said "all my fault" meaning it wasn't defective but you abused it.

From Leatherman:

WARRANTY EXCEPTIONS

The Leatherman Warranty covers only the original/primary owner and does not cover abuse, alteration, theft, loss, or unauthorized and/or unreasonable use of Leatherman products.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________

If you wrecked your Leatherman and want them to give you a free one then just send it in.
