My group of six is thinking about going to Pipestone Bay on Labor day this summer. We've done Jackfish a few times and want to try something new. Jackfish has been nice because it has been relatively quiet, even in the motorized zone. Can the same be said for Pipestone? Are campsites easy to come by? We're thinking about just south of the Lewis Narrows. My worry is that the EP allows 14 permits per day, whereas the Mudro EP that we would take to Jackfish only allowed 6. That could mean a lot of people.
We generally fish a lot so I'm hoping the fishing is pretty good. Jackfish has been good to ok, depending on the weather. If Pipestone were the same, we'd be happy.
I guess it depends on the time of year. My last few trips have been to Pipestone Bay. Not a small area. But I've never had a problem finding a campsite in June. There's like 30+ campsites in that area. Should be bound to find 1 or 2.
Been through Pipestone a few times over the years. Fishing has always been very good, campsites have always been available ( there are a lot) and we have rarely seen a motorized boat. As far as traffic, there is always some, but I've never seen a lot. Most people are just passing through. You can go back and forth between the two bays at the portage halfway up both bays. Sometimes you can actually float through, so you could use either entry(Fall, Mudro, Mudro Restricted). There are actually 8 Mudro permits, 2 just do not allow camping on Horse Lake (restricted). I like the area.
