While I’d be disappointed to diminish one of my personal favorite pass-times - troll hunting - would it be possible to program the site to not allow users with fewer than two pine trees from reviving posts older than something like three years? I’d hate to quash any legit new members, but it seems like it’s trolls that mostly do this.

This was disappointing. I was hoping to talk about processed meats.

With a moniker like Porkeater, I can see why. :)

I tried to revive an old thread and I got a quick, “nice try”. And I said, no... north country! :)

Off-topic question: what does the number of pine trees signify?

Number of posts here. Hover over the first tree to get the exact number for any member and you'll get the idea of the number needed to plant your next tree.

:-) Sorry, I can't break the habit, either...

FYI, maybe it is my lack of technology, that works on my desk top computer when you have the curser, but has never worked with my phone or Ipad when you have to touch the screen.
This is simply info for others that may not access this site with a desk top computer.

I have an iPad and I just looked at your trees. You have 2644 posts. Just hold your finger down on the first tree.

I'm confused. Why can't an old thread be brought back up?

I stand corrected, you are right, just checked it out. Thanks for the info, I never knew that, as they were hidden at the top of my feed until I looked now.

I didn't realize old posts can't be brought back to life, either. What's considered "old"?

I'm also curious why it's not cool to revive an old thread, especially given that it's not uncommon to have someone point out the search function when someone asks a question that has apparently been discussed before. Thanks.

I think the key here is "by a new user". But I haven't tried it, so maybe I'm wrong.

There is nothing that stops anyone from replying to an old thread as far as I know. In fact, that is the issue. Spammer periodically brings old threads back to life.

By "can't", I meant that I was unaware that a person wasn't supposed to bring threads back to life. Or is it just the new user that isn't supposed to bring back a thread? What's too old for a thread to be brought back? Just curious of the policy. Thanks

Wow, a thread from the site owner about "Spam",
"Spamming is the use of messaging systems to send an unsolicited message (spam) to large numbers of recipients for the purpose of commercial advertising, for the purpose of non-commercial proselytizing, or for any prohibited purpose (especially the fraudulent purpose of phishing)."----Wikipedia.
That is turned into complaints/questions about adding to or bringing up an old topic.

What ever, thanks Adam for trying to keep this forum going!

When using the Search function, it's nice to reply to a post about the topic so I can bring it to the top and avoid going through the Search function every time.

I think if Adam had said: "If you see an old thread get topped by a spammer, please drop us a heads up email so we can delete it."

Many bulletin boards have an option along with "reply", etc., to "report" just for this.

I get it now, though not sure why or how Jackfish uses the search to avoid using the search.......

Just to clear some things up.

1) Please let us know if you see a post that is spam or inappropriate. That was the point of this thread.
2) If you want to respond to an old thread, go for it.

You just confused me of what the heck we talking about?
I always thought sometimes old threads brought up held a lot of good info?
Something with new posters not okay?
Confused, but that is nothing new.

I hope my post toward the top did not confuse or mislead anyone. It was just an idea, and perhaps not a very good one. There is nothing wrong with restarting an old post -some have timeless information and some are just classic. Once in a while, though, one is revived by a troll sitting in a techno-sweatshop somewhere and they are just trying to sell something. They are not hard to spot.

I’ve been caught in a few old thread bumps without realizing it.

Told a story and came back a day or two later to catch up on the thread and figured out I had already posted the same story in the same thread. Thankfully, my embellishments after a few more years had gone by weren’t too big!
