The news stories calling it a mask mandate on all federal buildings and lands are overly simplistic and are giving an inaccurate impression.

Note that the order requires compliance with CDC guidelines. That will likely be something along the lines of having a mask at hand and wearing it when within 6' of someone outside your family/group. I doubt it will mean wearing masks all the time you are in the outdoors on federal land.

On a trail that may mean having it in your pocket just in case. That is currently the rules where I live.

Interesting examples. Both the Grand Canyon and Bryce Canyon experience high concentrations of visitors at paved sidewalks running along the top edges of the canyons. Social distance between visitors of both those parks is frequently less than 6 feet.

Early data suggest total deaths in 2020 exceeded those in 2019 by 12%. It is time for us all to do more. Is wearing a mask too much to ask?

"But my freedoms!"

Last time I was at the Grand Canyon it may as well have been the Mall of America up around the rim.

Follow CDC guidelines everywhere you go and you'll be set.

and for this year we chose to explore Death Valley NP. It is open to day use only due to the California Stay at Home order. Of course we have campsite reservations.
The determining factor is capacity of ICU beds. When the local hospitals drop below 15 percent things get closed. And there aren't many in the area.

Hmm. We may stay in Nevada instead of staying in the park.

On the trail thing. I often forget to stuff one in my pocket when on local trails and yep we always run into one or two people with masks. ( we don't have crowds). I am the one running into the woods with back turned!

Being OCD, I have certain pockets designated for holding the same particular items... wallet in left rear, keys in right front, phone in left front... Since March, a mask has always occupied the right rear pocket. No big deal.
