Is all Moose lake (out side Ely) within the BW? Staying up there in June and trying to determine if we need a boat permit. Also if we do it looks like we need to request 7 permits, one for each day we want to fish. Thanks for the clarification.

Yes part of Moose lake is in the BWCAW. It has a 25 hp motor limit. For day trips you would need 1 for each day you enter. A little more than half the lake is in the BWCAW.

For the part that is not in BW is a permit still required?

No, you can play/fish in the southern half without a permit. I’ve caught some really nice fish in the outside the BWCA portion of the lake.

Just for a reference point, the BWCAW boundary runs on an east-west line through the middle of a long island about a quarter mile due north of the boat ramp.

Got it! I finally looked at the map a second time. I wasn't sure how these boarder lakes were set up. On a good note at least we will be able to fish even if we do not get a permit. This Wed. is not going to be fun trying to get a permit for every day we are up there.

Try getting those permits thru an outfitter. They seem to have a golden pen on getting those permits....
Would love to know their approach.

They enlist as many locals, family, & friends as possible. I would love to see the data on area of residency of those issued/won and the facts would be known no assumptions. It only makes sense to protect their business. Don't blame them, but they do not have guarantees either.

FYI, keep someone in the bow at all times as a lookout. Decades later, I still remember the sound of a lapstrake hull striking a rock in the twilight. A boater had split the difference down the middle of a channel, when the safe passage was actually off to the side. He got to shore ... just barely.

I also wonder what happens to those permits, but the rule about not being able to change trip leaders would make what you're describing quite difficult to pull off?

No it works out quite easily. Trip leader only has to be present for issue of permit. All alternate leaders can take the four boats out.

Alternates can only be designated at time of reservation as well. You can go back and add people to your permit but you can't designate them as alternate trip leaders.

The permit is only valid while leader is in the wilderness. Everyone enters together at permit EP and date, and anyone can leave except if trip leader leaves, everyone else must.

Thanks for clarification. We have 6 permits for Moose, motor boat. All permits have alternates added. With a family and three boats, think we are covered.
