We have been coming up to BWCA for 15 years, the last six in Gunflint using Seagull Outfitters. We have always come in September. Last year (2020) we came the last week of the month. By the time we were near Grand Marais all pull offs were full of cars, the town was full of tourists and the parking lots at all the outfitters were all full. And that was the last week of September.

We are now planning 2021. Wanting to stick with September again, but unsure on going early, mid month or late. Several of the guys would like to go earlier in the month but with the crowds in 2020 we are afraid that there will be a lot of groups and paddlers if we go any earlier. Weather and fall colors were perfect last year. However two years ago we had 40 degree highs, snow and sleet.

Any thoughts?

September is a popular and busy time there with fall foliage and other things. I don't know if would make much difference, but you might try a week earlier, which would put you before peak fall color, but it might just be a crapshoot. Did you go around a weekend? If so maybe try mid-week to mid-week if possible . . . ?

ocky - Yes, that week (weekend, especially) was NUTS. My daughter and family had a campsite at Tettegouche, and they said that having that reserved was about the only way they were assured of a parking spot anywhere near the area. Vehicles were parked on the shoulders for miles in both directions along 61 anywhere there was a popular pullout.

Last fall, we canoed the Kawishiwi Triangle September 16-19 and the colors were just starting, nice areas popping here and there. Then, we stayed in Grand Marais to hike the SHT October 6-9 and it was obviously past peak, but nice to see more expansive views through the trees at ridges and overlooks.

We went last week of September in 2020 and the colors were amazing, and temps were "t shirt" weather.

With the crowds we saw, however, we are hesitant about going any earlier this year.
