Yea, I think you're right on the spelling. I must've been looking at an original version of Beowulf or something in Old English before searching the bwca maps for this lake :)

For those who weren't familiar with Smite, here is the topo I mentioned. It may not be as expansive as the stuff East of the Gunflint and not as otherworldly as something like say Travois, but it just comes out of nowhere. There is a small patch of open rock at the top that I imagine has some pretty stellar views. My attempts to get there failed because a blowdown ('99?) knocked over a good chunk of the big white pine on the slope and the pile measured 4-5 trees deep. With the combination of blowdown, regrowth, and just outright steep topo, I ran out of time and stopped about halfway up the Eastern slope. Smite used to have two portages (only one marked on this map), but I hardly found any remnant of the one heading to Adams and didn't search for the Beaver one. With the absolute sublime Beaver/Adams portage, the alternate route through Smite seems uncessary except for the interesting topo making it scenic in its own right.

I've been to Smite a few times.
fished it.
It really should have a campsite on it, in my opinion.
Used portage to West each time.... can paddle through to Adams, for most part.

years ago, maybe 2005 or so we were camped on the east campsite on Sagus in the little corner. We had gone to Raven that morning just to see the lake and caught a bunch of walleye at the little overflow creek where it comes into Sagus from Roe, good spot in the spring if the creek is flowing.
Anyway, in the afternoon after a walleye lunch, I was looking at maps and saw this topo line above Smite and the huge drop. So a friend and I bushwhacked up there from Sagus, no packs no canoe, just a hike. Came through next to that little horseshoe pond (beaver dam in a valley). A lot of blowdown on the slopes!
High and Dry is right, its open on top, open forest, you can sit right on the edge with your feet hanging over, fantastic view to the south and east. Strange, you don't see a lot of water, mostly just Smite Lake and all the hills and forest to the south. It was a good afternoon diversion, I still think about it. Since then I've really wanted to go to Smite, but have paddled different paths and haven't made it back that way yet...
