Since I have rather limited experience in the BWCAW, I am also presenting a selection from Quetico. This picture is taken from a campsite and the far shoreline is almost directly south.
"If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs" chances are you missed something. (Inspired by Rudyard Kipling.)

Hint #1:
To the left side of the photo is a small burn area. The mass to the right side is the root ball of a recently toppled pine tree. This photo was taken in 2014.

Hint #2:
I have camped on this lake on three separate occasions, each time at a different campsite. None of these campsites are visible to the others. The photograph was taken from the southern-most of these three.

Hint #3.
"A River Runs Through It" is not only a movie title, it describes this lake.
If you looking almost due south in the photograph, you'd be looking at the approximate location of a portage leading to the next lake. That's all you would likely need to find the portage, which runs along side the river. The volume of water flowing is sufficient to be heard from several hundred yards away on a calm day.

Hint #4
When you complete the southern portage out of this lake you will have reached another lake with the same name.
