Palomar on braid (I use braid on my spinning reels)
Orvis knot on light mono, Clinch on regular mono (pretty much just for fly fishing tippet)
San Diego Jam on fluro (mainly for bottom bouncer leaders and tippet for sinking fly line polyleaders).

cyclones30: "Good old improved clinch has yet to really let me down.
Palomar or uni if I'm feeling spunky or need to tie line together.
But 95% of line to hook-eye is improved clinch "
I like the trilene knot because I think it gives a longer knot life than the improved clinch but...after literally growing up and tying millions of improved clinch...once it gets dark out...I am 100% clinch!
I use bloodknot to tie lines together.
I am an old mono guy...if I do use braid, I use palomar.

mgraber: "Palomar, but also uni, and sometimes improved clinch, since I’ve tied it for about 50 years, and it’s still a very good knot if tied perfectly ( most aren’t). "
I also use the improved clinch, and am always willing to learn, so...what is the key to tying one 'perfectly'? Or asked differently, what mistake do most people make so the aren't tied perfectly?
Thanks

If you tie them carelessly the wraps do not always stay nicely stacked which weakens the knot, sometimes a lot. It is a knot that should always be lubed with a little spit. It should pull down nice and smooth. In a test I saw in a magazine, it was one of the strongest but least consistent knots tested, which was entirely dependent on how well it is tied. I did some personal tests at home with a scale and found that to be very true. If you tie a good one it will have 5-7 wraps and pull down smooth and easy with no bunching up. I might add that many people tie the Palomar incorrectly. It is important that both lines on a Palomar stay parallel throughout the knot. Many people ignore this and the knot is much weaker because it cuts itself at the twist. I've had to prove this to some friends who had no idea. After putting double line through the eye, hold the line on both sides of the eye and make sure it is not twisted the entire length of the doubled section before tying. I shouldn't have said "most aren't" tied correctly, I should have said many aren't.
So many fish,so little time
