"
That set the bar pretty high for future trips to the BW.

We can likely, at least, duplicate this. We know how to fish. There was nobody else fishing this gem and the path to it was "The Road Not Taken".
I would like to go after lakers soon after ice-out...and find a nice walleye hole too.

I get a kick outta the secrecy when you’re literally going out of your way to talk about your fish and volunteering info. It’s not like someone has you backed into a corner trying to find your secret spot guys. The brookie lakes ain’t always easy to get to, but the list of lakes is literally public record and easily found.
I would rather catch native lake trout than dumb-as-rocks stocked specks but that’s just me.

39” pike
25” walleye
19” SMB
25” laker
Caught, but not worth measuring: perch, sunfish, rock bass, crappie.
Still haven’t pulled off an October brookie trip.
Coincidentally, these four BWCA PBs are also my overall PBs. Have many walleyes close to that outside BWCA, but the other three aren’t even close outside BWCA. There’s no place I like fishing more than wilderness canoeing.

These were all in Quetico, but I’ll play!
SMB: 20.5”, Kawnipi on a 30+ year old black chugbug from my deceased grandfather’s tackle box. I kept a leader on the lure just in case!
Walleye: 28”, Conmee on a blue and silver shad rap 9. My wife’s first BW fish was a 27” walleye at the outflow of Silver Falls on a slimer and jig head. Crazy!
Pike: 32”, Robinson trolling a deep down husky jerk in perch glass (this is my only personal best that I should really work hard at improving)
Laker: 25” (that’s an estimate, didn’t get a tape on it) on a smaller laker lake in SW Quetico. Purpledescent taildancer 11
Whitefish: 22”, Saganagons NE arm on a white 3” grub with a pink jig. Caught two nearly identical whitefish back to back. Those are the only two I’ve ever caught inside or outside the boundary waters

43" pike
47" musky
No clue about lakers because I've never measured one
25" walleye: Sad, huh? I have caught a lot of them around this size.
19" smallmouth: I just can't catch a bass much bigger than this.

Holy frig! 10 hours you'll never forget!! Dang.
My record speck is 20 7/8" x 3 3/4 lb out of Algonquin in the late 80s I'd guess. But we caught a whack of fat 19- to 19-and-a-half inchers x three-and-a-half-plus pounders the last couple years at our Secret Lake in Ontario, amazingly not Algonquin. There are no specks in Quetico.
As for Quetico lakers, nothing to write home about. Maybe 6 lb?
I've caught a few nice "northerns" as you call 'em in Quetico. Best was about 24 lbs x 46" - while fishing for pickerel on a 1/8 oz jig and 6-lb test line, no less. I played that fish so long, and then it came alongside the canoe, and let go of the jig. My buddy reached into the water, bare-handed, and pulled that chunkster out. Absolutely amazing!
Best pickerel* was this past July - 30" x 10 lb 3 oz. Quite a surprise, that. On our 23-day trip.
I still seek my elusive 5-lb smallie. Have got them up to 4 lb and 20" I guess. Maybe this summer? Debbie and I are heading into Quetico again this summer. 23 days was nice in 2020, so we thought we'll double it this summer! Imagine Quetico, virtually deserted for the second year running....

Walleye: 2 right at 30" Basswood and Brent (#9 silver/black taildancer and silver/black minnow rap both 4 inches long)
Largemouth 20" Basswood (5 inch white Zulu minnow on a drop shot rig)
Northern Pike 42" Wicksteed (red eye wiggler spoon)
Smallmouth 22" Gardner Bay (#9 silver/black taildancer)
Lake Trout 36" (silver black dt rap)
Favorite fish to catch:
The Northern on Wicksteed, was out getting water and casting for the heck of it--complete surprise. The Thickness of this Pike was Leech lake strain musky like. I've caught a lot of 38-39" Northerns and even though he was just a few inches longer it seemed like a foot with it's girth. Just an impressive fish. Plus we had a conversation about letting him go and he didn't take my hand with him :)
20" Small mouth my 7 year old son caught on his first trip. Just the joy of hearing a kid catch a fish is so much better than when I catch one.
40" inch Laker my Dad caught on his first trip. My Dad acted like an expert on trout for years after that---just ask him...
26 inch Lake trout my wifes' first Laker ever. She did everything wrong. When the fish pulled hard she got scared and opened the bail, then reeled backwards until the handle fell off her reel---luckily fell into the canoe---then at the end she said "I can't believe how calm you were the whole time" I don't remember it that way, but I like her version better :)

my wife catches all the big ones...
Walleye 26"
Pike 14 lbs, I don't recall the length.
SMB 20" My wife has me by 3".
Laker 27" I don't usually target them. just started trying recently, and am up to 4 now. lol.
We're doing an ensign, ima, frasier, kek, vera loop this year, so should have plenty of Laker ops. I don't think it's unrealistic to improve 2 of those PB's in one trip. One can hope. For someone who has fished the boundary waters for 50 years, those numbers are a little lean. But the older i get, the less I care. It's still my favorite place to fish. It's all about the setting.

I fished this lake many times and caught plenty of Brookies. Used to catch Splake, but they stopped stocking those also. Only Rainbow I ever caught and probably one of the last taken in the BWCA. Much more meat than Brookies. We steaked that one and grilled over the fire. Arguably the best fish I've eaten in the BWCA.

First, I'm more into exploring than fishing, but that's led me to some good lakes.
Still my list isn't too impressive except for the last story.
Some I weighed, some I measured, some I just eyed.
I ve guided many people who have topped my best, which brings me more joy.
Anyway...
Smallmouth - 4 pounds
Largemouth - 4 pounds
Walleye - 7 pounds
Lake Trout - 9 pounds
Perch - about 1 pound
Brook Trout ------ On my bucket list
Pike - 45 inches.... But caught on a lure that I carved myself at age 15... 20 years later a boys imagination came true. I retired that lure immediately and it hangs with picture of that fish.

Speckled: "jap also use to have descent size lakers , not sure what happened there , maybe they ate all the rainbow trout LOLJakthund: "Here's one that is and always will be my best of species (and only) in BWCA. Always because they stopped stocking these about 25 years ago.
Caught on one of the stocked lakes in 2001. Wish I had a better picture before the colors faded, but I forgot my camera at camp.
"
They used to stock JAP with rainbows. My inlaws tell stories of really good fishing in that lake, big fat rainbows. "
last time there 1997 , everything was 16"-17" with bladder worm.

The lip is a penny that I smashed with a hammer.
I originally measured the pike at 44 inches, but back then I didn't know you're supposed to pinch the tail when measuring....so I've added an inch....like a real fisherman ;)

"
Whadda photo!"
Thanks! I caught two that size back to back on a jig and leech. Each time they ate whatever I was reeling in.
The one in the photo broke the line at the side of the canoe (probably for the better because there was no way I was getting it out of the water). This is the small one that I was able to land.

thegildedgopher: "I get a kick outta the secrecy when you’re literally going out of your way to talk about your fish and volunteering info. It’s not like someone has you backed into a corner trying to find your secret spot guys. The brookie lakes ain’t always easy to get to, but the list of lakes is literally public record and easily found. You will find that catching a big Brookie isn’t as easy as you make it out to be, especially in lakes where they are stocked as fingerlings. I would take a Brookie over a laker any day of the week!
I would rather catch native lake trout than dumb-as-rocks stocked specks but that’s just me."

There is more to this story....
I was fishing with my buddy, who's basement I carved the lure in.
He's a very good fisherman, and takes it way more seriously than I do.
Well I decided to try the old lure, as he laughed.
After a few casts, I had a hit !
He says.... "What kind of pathetic fish would hit that?"
My next cast I hooked that pike.
He does have me beat with a 47 incher & that is his jointed Rapala hanging in the canoe in the picture. I should have gotten a picture of the lure in the fishes' mouth, but I was in a big hurry to get it back in the water.

shock: "PT , whats up with the walleye ? a typ-o ;)"
LOL I was thinking the same thing!
Everything else on the list is out of this world…I could fish everyday the rest of my
Life in the BWCA and not best his NP, smally, whitefish, BT lengths without ALOT of luck.
