At 7:30AM the Jeep said -34 at my place in Chisholm, -38 when I got down by the lake, and -44 in a low lying swamp on my ride to work. Jumped 6 guest's cars once I got to the resort. Check your car's battery if you come north this week.... Gotta love MN ;-)
If they call it tourist season, why doesn’t the DNR issue tags???

tumblehome: "-26’ in the banana belt near Duluth this morning.
Chickadees and blue jays came out after sunrise for copious amounts of sunflower seeds in the feeders."
Ha Ha, I just told someone the same thing, calling Duluth the banana belt. It was minus 34 at my neighbors place in Detroit Lakes this morning, I'm staying in Duluth until this cold snap breaks.
May the rivers be crooked and winding, and your portages lonesome, leading to the most amazing view.

Mocha: "Hay pine tree, I'm over visiting in breezy point. It was -35 on north side of pelican lake this morning"
Hope you have a good time up here.
Usually sometime soon they cut a hole at Breezy on Pelican lake in the ice for a winter dip to raise money for I believe the special Olympics. That would be a cold dip today.

25E of Ely- that sounds like somewhere near Snowbank Lake? Maybe what used to be called Smitty's? I wonder if the new owners are COOP observers?

Wendigo41: " Yes Snowbank lake.
Den "Smitty" Schmidt was a volunteer for the National Weather Service. He died last summer. Kurt Kruse has been the observer for the last couple of years at Snowbank.
"
Thanks for this info and the pic!!!

I was supposed to be in the BW this weekend, but we’re doing day trips from the cabin instead. Woke up to -38 this morning, real temp, my Expedition took a few cranks to turn over. It warmed up a little, but by afternoon the wind started really whipping around. Tomorrow’s supposed to be more of the same. Saw two wolves run across the road on our way home right before dark.

gopher2307: "I was planning my first winter Bdubs trip this weekend...up until Tuesday when my wife talked me out of it. Would have been a solo, first timer. That would have been an experience. "
A good time for a first trip is like the middle of March. Temps much warmer, days are longer(remember camping in January when only 8 hours of daylight-means a long night in the sleeping bag). Plan it right when like a hard pack and little snow on the lake you can really travel. Yes sometimes in T-shirt, but yes I still have been caught in snow storm and -20 degrees F. than.

My truck on Saturday. We were birding at Sax-Zim Bog near Meadowlands. It warmed up to -36 by the time my wife and I were walking in the woods. Quite a day.

I always figured anything below +30 is cold. This is a clear reminder why I do trips in the May to Sept. windows. I stop taking outside walks at the +25 degree mark.
the greatest come backs are reserved for those with the greatest deficits.

See any Great Grays?"
We saw several big birds, but nothing that would sit still for us, and close enough, for a positive identification. Along with the typical winter birds, we saw several boreal chickadees, three-toed woodpecker, and a magpie. We also snowshoed at Whiteface Reservoir where we saw a sharp-shinned hawk and two bald eagles. I found the presence of the bald eagles a bit odd since I don't know of any open water in the vicinity of Whiteface.

I did indeed rock down to Electric Avenue, but I did not take it higher. I regret that.

There's always open water on a few spots along the river and at the outlet of the dam. Plenty of road killed deer to feast on HWYs 53 and 4 right next door as well. The troglodytes have a penchant for feeding deer just to watch them, regardless of proximity to major roads.

Gotcha... makes perfect sense.
