So I am planning a BWCA trip in the beginning of June. Main fish we're after is walleye, but we're happy with Smallies and Northern and Panfish as well. We booked an entry point in #29 which is North Kawishiwi River entry. This is our first time entering this area and I wanted to know if anyone has any advice for where to go in that area. Our plan right now is to start at #29, Ojibway Lake, portage into Triangle and then south into the Kawishiwi River but from there we have not decided yet. I imagine the Kawishiwi is absolutely amazing for walleye, like all rivers, but does anyone have any experience in this area and have advice where to go? I have a friend that has a bad taste in his mouth for walleye fishing because of getting skunked so I want to show him exactly how good walleye fishing can be. Thanks!
Go west young man! Once you hit the river, that is, otherwise you'll end up in the numbered lakes and you may as well have got a permit for Lake One. The river is really just a narrow lake, not much current to speak of except at the portages which go around rapids. I've had more luck with smallies and northern than walleye on the river, but they're in there. Recommend you basecamp near the North/South split and daytrip down both branches or camp in a cople of different spots as you make your way around the triangle cutting through Clear Lake.
