The “Must watch outdoor film” thread discussed the filming locations of “A River Runs Through It” and it got me interested in visiting that area. I’ve always wanted to see Going to the Sun Road in Glacier N.P. too after seeing “The Shining”. I’ve been to The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park Colorado.

Has a movie ever motivated you to visit an area because of the scenery?

The movie “High Sierra” led me to hike Mt. Whitney and spend time in the Sierra Nevada mountains. I also sought out where Forest Gump stopped running in Monument Valley because it seemed epic.
There are other locations that I wasn’t specifically there because of the film but found them interesting. True Grit (1969) was filmed in Ridgway and Ouray Colorado and many of the buildings are still there as is the jail wagon. The gunfight meadow with Courthouse Rock as a backdrop looks the same today. The old girder I-40 bridge crossing The Colorado River in “Easy Rider” is gone now but the old arched Route 66 bridge also seen in “The Grapes of Wrath” is still there. A newly released film “Nomadland” was filmed in Quartzsite Arizona and Cedar Pass Campground in the South Dakota Badlands. Both places I spend time at and find beautiful in a stark way.

I would like to visit Austria where “The Sound of Music” was filmed and McAfee Knob on the Appalachia Trail seen in “A Walk in the Woods”. Also many more places too numerous to mention.

Are there any film locations you would like to visit?

I forgot I visited the location of the Wood Chipper scene in “Fargo” while fishing on the south west corner of Square Lake near Stillwater Minnesota.

Going to the Sun in Glacier is well worth it.

I visited the location of the memorable panoramic scene in Belushi's Continental Divide many, many times before I even knew about the movie. East of Crestone. The location is better than the movie. :-)

I’ve been to a few locations in Death Valley NP where Star Wars scenes were filmed.
There is a bridge that Forrest Gump runs over, I’m not sure where that is, but it is a small stone arch bridge with a mountainous background...that’s a place I’d like to see.

I also was at The Stanley, and Dumb + Dumber is my all-time favorite so that was cool. Race you to the top!

Rio Grand Gorge bridge in New Mexico featured in Natural Born Killers is sweet!

If you're not afraid of heights...

I made the mistake of touring universal studios in California which has ruined me for most movies.
