I just got back from a snowshoe trip to a yurt in the Porkies. (It was awesome and I highly recommend it. The yurt is basically a very well insulated cabin with a good wood stove).

I tried using my MSR Universal. The stove worked great. But I tried to use the stove on wood table in the yurt. The table got quite hot. It was hotter than I was comfortable with.

Does anyone have a simple heat shield to use under these stoves?

Mine came with one - a heavy foil disc for under and a windscreen to go around. Both of them and my two DragonFlys. Can be ordered separately.

Welll... I just looked and mine has one too. It was in the box and I didn't know what it was for...

Yeah, all my MSR's have a round foil part for underneath and one to bend around the stove from the sides more for wind and such. I don't always use them but it makes the stove more efficient even if you're not afraid of burning stuff or it's not really that windy.

PS I wrap wind screen around fuel can with an elastic and pack reflector in my fry pan. No folds. Scrub and flatten it every few years. Good as new 15 years later.

Carbon felt welding cloth

I picked up some of this for use with alcohol stoves. Certainly would be suitable for your task.

I had an MSR stove for many years and cooked many, many meals. I have given it away now that there are isobutane stoves which I find to be better in every way. But it's your choice

I would suggest making a table protector out of silicone rubber. Just buy a sheet of it and cut it into a circle with scissors. It's light, it won't burn, it will protect the table or whatever, and it is easy to clean and dry. They roll up for storage.

They also make great potholders that work even when wet.

A remote tank isobutane stove gets just as hot. That's why MSR included the base shield/reflector with the canister WindPro, Whisperlite Universal and the discontinued Rapidfire.
MadAngler found his before I could offer a set. I do have about 8 extras.
Storing the windscreen, I do just fold it. Even at that it only takes a pull or 2 over a gunnel to get folds/kinks/deformations out. I use a 11 ounce fuel bottle most all the time so wrapping the screen around it will not work well. My first screen from the 1990's is still in use.
