Looking at the weather report for next Friday,(high of about 29 F. and 5 to 10 mph winds), and we will be getting started about 11:00 pulling pulks and hoc skis. What would you experts start out wearing for the day?

A nice long sleeved wicking shirt and a button down wool shirt over that. My pants would be my woolen bibs. All of that breaths really well. With the wind being at a breeze, I would also probably have my canvas anorak on, but would probably take it off after I got heated up. Depends on the cooling of the breeze to the heating up ratio. As you probably know, during the winter your enemy is sweat.

That’s about what I had at the start of my trip last March. I went with light weight pants and sweater over base layer and light breathable gloves, with wind layer accessible. In half an hour the sweater was off. The hard part is boots. And if the sun is out, keeping feet dry will take some effort.

What did you end up starting with as layers? What did you transition to?

For travel days
Marino Long johns and long sleeve t
Synthetic wicking shirt and a marino sweater
Wind pants and then waterproof pants
Light gloves
Wool socks and leather hiking boots

Fishing days
Same as above but depending on the temperature I might shed a layer
Outer layer was ice fishing bibs and ice fishing coat
Muck boots with wool socks
Ice fishing mittens or gloves depending on the temperature
Also took hand warmers and toe warmers for cold days
