A couple of weeks ago, Denton Doc slipped on his icy driveway down in Texas. He had a bad fall, whacking his head pretty hard. He has been in ICU ever since. He is in pretty rough shape.
Looks like DD's challenges will be considerable. Frontal lobe "bruising" limits his cognitive abilities, though the doctors remain hopeful for his recovery. He will require substantial neural therapy,
DentonDoc has had some new swelling. This required brain surgery, to which he appears to be responding somewhat well. Though his response times are slow, he recognizes family and can respond to commands via "hand squeezes", etc.
He & his family will continue to welcome your thoughts and prayers as his will be a long road ahead via traumatic brain injury rehab.
Mrs. DentonDoc has been kind enough to share a link for a site on "Caring Bridge" where you may find updates on Denton Docs condition.
Fellow bwca.com paddlers ... please keep Denton Doc in your prayers.

We have been keeping DD in our prayers ever since hearing this news on another board. If you don't know him, pray anyway. He is a great guy, a long-time canoe-tripping friend to many, and a real class act, too. He will have a long road back, but we hope and pray that it will all work out for him to be active again.
When we retire we all hope that we will be able to have more time for the activities that we enjoy. All of us are just a mis-step away from disaster, and when that happens to a friend, it is a sobering thing. Every day is a gift. Be thankful if your days are full of activity, even if it is restricted in personal contacts, or sometimes seems less than exciting. I have three friends now who are fighting severe, serious, life-threatening (or lifeSTYLE threatening) conditions, and it makes me think to count my blessings every day that I can go out for a walk, come here on this board, cook a meal, or get in touch with a friend.

It is not easy as we watch those close to us fade. I recognize that life is too short to stay miserable and do what I can to bring joy where I go. And to have gratitude I am still going reasonably well.
I hope someone reading this has had a shared moment of joy with DD and that he is having some of those memories, too.

Loving God, I pray that you will comfort DD in his suffering, lend skill to the hands of his healers, and bless the means used for his cure. Give DD such confidence in the power of your grace, that even when he is afraid, he may put his whole trust in you; through our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen

The news on the Caring Bridge site is that DD has improved enough to get out of ICU and into a rehab area. The road back will take some time now. But good news nontheless!

Yes, Denton Doc’s brain injury recovery will take a very long time.
Doc’s wife says "progress will be measured in baby steps and she probably won’t have much by the way of updates for awhile." She continues to request prayers and healing energy as there is a long way to go.
Please Keep Denton Doc in your prayers.

Not sure how I missed this news. Wow... so sorry to hear about this.
Get well soon, Wayne! We're all counting on sharing the love of paddling with you for many more years. Prayers for a strong and full recovery!

Wally13: "Molly,
Wayne is a strong man in mind and body. I am confident he will come through this. It’s just going to be a long road. "
Yes, strong is right. He’s one of those guys a bit my senior that could swing a paddle to where it was all I could do to keep up. Haha! For anyone who had the pleasure of traveling with him, he was that guy that had his canoe tripping routine down to a science. From food, to his equipment, to his knowledge of the Q and WCPP. I’m praying he will get back in the saddle again soon. One of my later trips was with him and it was cool to me the things he noticed and took in while out paddling. But most noticeable is his heart for his friends, family and the best of life. So I hope for his sake and those around him he recovers quickly and is whole again soon. Get well Doc... can’t wait to hear of your next paddling adventure!

FANTASTIC NEWS
A couple of days ago Denton Doc's wife posted on Caring Bridge that Wayne is making some good progress towards his recovery. Everyone's prayers are helping for sure. Keep your prayers coming.
Journal Entry by Jan Spence — March 14, 2021
The news continues to be good! Wayne is getting stronger and steadier, and he is putting some of the pieces together mentally. There are gaps in what he knows, but I see him trying to figure it out. Cari came down with her guitar this weekend, and she and Wayne sang together. It was good for both of them, AND today Wayne could tell me some of what they sang! That’s short term memory! ?? Music is such a powerful thing! We still have a ways to go, but I see improvement every day. Your prayers, healing and loving thoughts, and positive juju are powerful! Deep deep gratitude!! ??

Denton Doc update.
Fantastic news. Wayne was released from the hospital yesterday and will start home healthcare starting Monday.
Everyone’s prayers and thoughts have certainly helped. A ways to go to full recovery, but Wayne is on his way.

Thanks for the update, Wally. Going home is a big deal. I've seen upticks in healing upon reaching home after prolonged hospitalizations. Sleep is so interrupted in hospitals and especially in an ICU.
I will paddle eternal, Kevlar and carbon.

Thanks to all for your thoughts and prayers. You guys are at least as powerful as the medical staff I was blessed with.
Although I’m not 100% yet and my next canoe trip will not be until next year, I’ve been medically cleared to drive again. I celebrated by making a driving to Chicago.
On the mental fitness dimension, I have returned to rehearsal for the musical “Guys and Dolls” for which I’ve been cast as one of the lead characters in a local production. Nothing like singing, dancing and delivering dialogue to keep you on your toes
Again, thanks to all of you. prayers are powerful stuff. I heard many a surprised comment from the medical folks during this journey

FANTASTIC!!!!! Hey, I'm planning a complicated trip into Atikaki mid-July next summer. Plan to have a basecamp on a lake north of Black Lake and canoes there so others can come in and out for their preferred trip duration. For roamers there are plenty of loops to do and come back to the base camp. Maybe a nice way to get that paddle wet and test the waters.

BWPaddler: "Very good news. Let us know if your performance makes its way to YouTube!"
Very unlikely since we are using copyrighted materials for the performance. The contact for which explicitly prohibits filming of any sort.
