I'm seeking advice for a solo canoe, here's my situation. I'm 6'2", nearly 200 lbs, and packing probably 40 to 60 pounds. I won't kneel in the canoe. I'd like the ability to troll fast with an empty boat in rough water and be able to land large pike.
I've read that taller sides provide "seaworthiness" in big waves, but tall sides create a problem of catching wind so that you get blown around more. I'm trying to find the best balance with this situation to maximize fishing in windy weather.
I've always used canoes with standard seats, but I'm also intrigued by pack canoes although I've never seen one. I'm curious how the seat in a pack canoe is placed, and if the low seat position causes difficulty with big fish.

I'm sure you'll get plenty of suggestions!

My $.02 is that the Northstar NW Solo would be an excellent fit for what you've described...

Northstar/Bell Rob Roy.

I'm 6'4" - 215lbs. I pack my gear in a hiking pack. It weighs around 40-45 lbs packed. The pack sits in the spot right behind the seat. It's super stable as you're basically sitting on the floor and incredibly fast. The low profile helps a ton with wind. Large waves break over and flow to the sides. I've had it out on Lake Superior a bunch and have yet to have issues with waves. We we're even riding some of the waves on superior for 50 or so yards at a time paddling between Two Harbors and Duluth.

You mentioned landing large pike. I'm unsure what constitutes landing, but large pike...I wouldn't want that thing in my lap. I've dealt with larger pike 30+ inches...I just don't bring them in the boat. The fish coming in the boat are dinner...brookies, eater sized walleye and lake trout and the occasional smallie or pike under 4lbs.

I've seen pictures of the Rob Roy and thought it would handle wind and waves easily, but wondered about fishing and comfort from sitting low. Can the Rob Roy be equip for trolling?
While trolling I'd prefer to use a single paddle rather than a kayak paddle so it won't hit the fishing line, is the Rob Roy compatible with a single paddle?

With a clamp on portage yoke, I mounted rod holders on the underside. When trolling, flip it around and clamp it behind the seat. I do paddle with a double blade and when I get fish, I just put the paddle down, turn and grab the pole.

I've never tried paddling it with a single blade.

That's a clever idea, never thought of having the rod holder behind me.
