Anyone in ely/cook/tower or at least north of Virginia?

How’s the ice up there? Foot still? Less? Sketchy or ok?

Thanks in advance.

Also- any snow on the ground?

Here is the report from Sawbill:

I've been on the ice near Ely everyday (mostly skate skiing, some walking). Ice is solid. Surface varies from day to day hour to hour. Pulling away from north shores of lakes and even the slowest moving streams (eg Dead River) are opening up. Snowing hard right now, maybe 2" on the ground in the last couple of hours. Remnants of winter's snow in well shaded areas. Today's snow will become slush on the lakes and then fade in the course of a day or so.

Hardly snowing on the lower Gunflint today, kind of a mix between snow and rain. Last week saw 19" of ice on our lake yet, but ours is quite small and will be one of the last to open up. The ice was still solid, but softening as it took only a matter of minutes to hand auger through it.

*** Scratch that, now it is really snowing on the Gunflint! ***

Snowing all day north of Duluth. No open water, not even close, not counting Lake Superior which is wide open.

It never surprises me how much of a difference in climate we have in MN. Down here in So. Mn. we are completely iced out. Supposed to be 71 here on Monday.

As of noon today, March 28, 2021, there was about 20 feet of open water between shore and the ice on Lake Bemidji's west shore by Diamond Point Park. YMMV

Was on a lake north of Two Harbors today. Plenty of ice yet...snowmobiles and ATV's are still out on the lake. Last weekend report was 20 inches. My guess on this lake is last week of April/first week of May.
