For traveling solo, it would be really nice to put the food in one 30L barrel and my gear in the other 30L barrel, thus easy to split the load in the canoe. When portaging, it would be great if I could just chuck one barrel on top of another in a pack, and go in a single carry. Maybe one of the barrels is already in the pack, hence vertically stacking the barrels being easier/faster when adding the second barrel.

Does anyone have a setup like this, or know if this will work in a GG Superior One pack (or smaller?)

Thanks!

IF you are trying to get the second barrel IN the pack, it will not work with a GG Superior 1 - or probably anything smaller. The GGS1 is a big pack, but not THAT big. Nor will it work side by side in the GGS1. I've tried. Assuming you want the barrel IN the pack, it will work with GG#4 pack, side by side or over/under if you like. I have done this for several years with two 30L's side by side. They ride better side by side and are easier to get in/out of the pack. To help loading/unloading them, I put a closed cell foam sleeping pad in the pack, which gives it some structure and holds the pack upright. It also provides some cushion for your back and the pad is long enough that the ends overlap, giving you two layers at your back. I also add a layer of pad on the bottom of the pack to help cushion the hard barrel edges, as I have found those are the wear points when setting it on granite ledges, etc. and it saves the fabric.

You could easily remove one barrel to load in the bow and fold the pack down/load the other in the stern. If paddling a tandem, most are wide enough to fit the whole pack forward or aft of the center yoke.

It's just what I found works. YMMV

The barrels vertically on top of each other would be very awkward to carry. I have no idea of any pack that tall. Maybe I just don’t have the imagination to picture the set up?

I put two side by side in my CCS guide pack. That works well. Fully loaded it is a tough carry at times so be careful...seemed lighter 15 years ago :)

Prior to the guide pack I used a GG Superior one pack it was a tight fit but they fit side by side. I sold mine—-the previous poster said he couldn’t get them side by side in his GG superior so maybe the model changed over time? I use 30L Harmony or Recreational barrel works.

Why not the food barrel on top of "gear" in the pack. Remove barrel only, you still have two items for trip adjustments. I would think it could go vertical if you wanted. I load my Ursa sacks this way, and other gear around it. If you are splitting the pack up, up and separate the barrel.

Using a barrel as a stuff sack seems like excessive and unnecessary weight IMO.
Just my $.02
