I’ve been reading a lot of recent and old threads on fish finders and am ready to purchase my first one, but I don’t understand the transducer setups very well. I’d like to get a Garmin Striker Vivid 4CV which comes with a GT20-TM transducer, which appears to be intended as a transit mount.

Can I just buy a block of foam, glue it to the hull, fill it with water, and use it as a shoot through the hull system on my Kevlar boat? Or do I need to by a different transducer? I want to shoot through the hull, and be able to move my transducer between canoes. I see references referring to doing similar things with foam or silicone but I am not clear what transducer they are using or if they are made for through the hull usage out of the box.

I’m open to other fish finders but this one just seem not overly expensive and maybe a little more useable on day trips outside the boundary waters.

Thanks!

You just need it to be perpendicular to you canoe floor. Lots of ways of doing that.

I use the striker and the transducer that came with it. I had read the idea, I think on this site, to buy duct seal (a black, sticky, rubbery material), create a loop out of it, and press it to the bottom of the canoe. You fill the middle with water to make a shallow pool inside the duct sealant loop. Mine has lasted a couple of years and withstands travel, etc. Mine sits right below my seat, so is not in the way. This works. Sometimes I have a hard time getting the water perfect or transducer pointed downward or the striker is glitchy, but eventually I get it to work. I do think it's a striker issue, rather than a transducer position though.

I also have the ice fishing transducer. May try that one this summer to see if it works better.

I have used the block of foam method with several different transducers, it works well. Find some closed cell foam and trace the outline of your transducer on it. Then cut out a hole just slightly smaller than what you traced out. Now you should be able to insert the transducer and it should fit snug. I use 100% silicone to glue the foam inside my canoe. I have found the silicone does not stick well to the foam, so I drilled a few holes around the block of foam and injected the silicone into the holes as well and it provides a more mechanical connection, sort of a silicone rivet. To use, just add a splash of water and insert transducer.

Be sure to place your transducer in an a area of your canoe where there is no foam core or the signal won't shoot through the hull.
