Fist time fishing the BWCA this end of July with a couple buddies. Looking for a good fishing loop (pike, walleye, smallmouth, and maybe some trout). Just trying to get some ideas on a good loop that will provide a lot of great fishing.

Welcome to BWCA.com. You have almost four months to register as a member here, do some research, read posts, ask general questions and plan your trip accordingly.

By your question above, it appears that you don't have a permit yet and are looking for a place to go. There are a lot of areas where permits are gone already so that narrows your options substantially. Getting on the BWCAW permit page to see what's available is the place to start.

What is your experience level with canoeing the BW?

Agree with Jackfish's recommendations. Permit availability will be where to start. Google search boundary waters permits, and find the recreation.gov site, check availability for your target entry date.

Agreed, register and/or do some looking with the search tool. Tons of fishing info (and also a ton in the fishing section)

How big of a loop? Moving almost every day?

Yes, we will be moving every day. Not sure on the loop size just yet, we’re looking into that. The permit we have is out of East Bearskin.

Take a look at the map on this site...there aren't much for loop options out of East Bearskin. The far east section of the BW is the smallest section. The only viable route I see for a loop is heading over to Pine, then up to the border, back west and down to Duncan, then back to East Bearskin.

Got the permit today. As far as the BW this is our first time, and we will be going out of east bearskin

Part of the fun is planning the route. Check out the maps. A few highlights in the area are some of the brook trout lakes. Johnson falls is spectacular on the west end of Pine. Make sure to check out both sets of falls, don't just stop at the first one, there's an upper falls that's equally as cool. Stairway portage between Duncan and Rose is cool and the falls there is worth seeing.

Caribou is arguably the best fishing lake in the area. No Trout but very good fishing for eyes and smallies and a beautiful lake to boot. johnson falls is an easy daytrip from there. Might be worth a day or two.
