I am interested in doing a late May trip to Trout Lake and it will be a little bit different trip than I am used to. In past years I have done canoe trips to various lakes on the Gunflint, using an outfitter to rent a canoe.

This year I would like to take my own small boat and 15HP motor to Trout Lake and stay at a campsite on the lake. I have several questions.

What is the best way to access Trout Lake with a boat and motor? I am doing some reading and I'm a little confused. Do I have to access from Lake Vermilion? It says there is a portage from Vermilion to Trout. How do you portage a 14ft Aluminum boat and 15HP motor?

Also, if I am staying on Trout Lake, do I need a permit? I have always done overnight paddle permits, but now I am seeing there are overnight motor permits. Is this what I need for what I am doing?

Appreciate any feedback.

If you are using a motor on Trout, you will need to secure an overnight motor permit. There is an individual that runs a mechanical portage (boat trailer and an ATV that will pull you and boat across the portage. His name is Lonnie Johnson - Phone number 218-780-3610

Good Luck

You can also use portage wheels if you have them. I’d also consider bringing a canoe as well. You might want to consider a portage into Orniack or into Pine, both are good for walleyes.
