Hi all,

I have 1983 Kevlar Loon that needs some attention on the fiberglass tabs where the seat mounts attach to the boat. I had a few questions on the process, and was hoping the community could shed some light on it.

1. Is it as simple as cleaning and just glassing over the current tabs with a couple layers of mat, then drilling through and remounting the seat mounts once dried for several days?

2. Can I glass two layers at the same time, or should I do one at a time with 24-48 hours of cure time between layers?

3. The port side is bad, starboard is ok; should I just reinforce all four tabs at the same time, to prevent future issues? This will mean drilling out good rivets on the entire right side and will double the time it takes for the job.

4. Is there a “favorite” rivet that anyone has that will hold tight and snap easy so it doesn’t crush the Kevlar on the coaming or the repaired glass tabs when I rivet everything back together?

5. I bought the West product (fiberglass repair kit) - will this be suitable?

Thanks for the help!

If it were mine, I'd get 2 small tabs of sheet metal and bend into L's....one for each side of vertical metal support. Drill holes to match existing holes on support and rivet together. Glass the "feet" of the L's to floor. One L may work but 2 will keep it from wanting to shift in/out better. You will have to match the bend in the L's to match the angle on the slanted hull bottom.
