Title says it all. Looking for trip suggestions for a solo trip towards October 1st time frame, around three days. Would like to come up, not do a ton of portages, probably base camp and spend some time fishing and relaxing. With this what do you all think is a good option?

cyclones30: "Should have most permits open for that time frame you'd think. "
No permit reservations beginning October 1, all permits self-issue.
Nobody exists on purpose, nobody belongs anywhere, everybody’s going to die.

Haha, good point! I'm in permit mode obviously....

Might be a good time to visit the numbered lakes. Two easy portages and you can get quite a ways in. They are good fishing lakes and usually crowded during the summer, but shouldn't be bad in October. Easy to adjust how far you go if the weather isn't looking good.

Homer Lake entry, paddle to Vern and pick one of the two campsites. Easy entry, couple short easy portages. Good fishing on Vern and right from camp at both campsites. Take a daytrip up the Vern River for more good fishing and scenery. Fish above and below the small narrows/rapids. Other daytrips available if you are in the mood. We have found very good smallie and walleye fishing on Vern Lake and up the Vern River and have caught a lot of nice fish from both of the campsites. Last summer I caught 7 - 19 inch walleyes from camp over a few days just casually fishing from the site on the southern shore. A few years ago I got some decent eyes and several really nice smallies from the site on the northern shore. And we don't fish that hard. Kind of off the beaten path, not a popular area. Good chance of some nice solitude.

I still think Homer could be the ticket but Frenchy has some good suggestions too. If you go to Horseshoe, one portage further will put you on Vista with a 5 star campsite on the southern end, beautiful lake and very good fishing. Been a long time, want to get back there someday.

Try South Kawishiwi entry #32.
From #32 to just south of Clear Lake has short portages, nice campsites where you can basecamp and pike, walleye, sm bass, largemouth bass and pan fish.
Only 20-25 minutes from Ely.
