Ok friends- Has anyone done the 600+ rod portage east of Rose Lake?
Working on planning our route for this fall. Thanks!

It’s about as easy as a two mile portage can get. Most on a grade... but it’s two miles so don’t be like nctry and not address a sore foot issue as soon as it starts. Especially at the beginning of a forty day trip. Haha!

It’s called the “Long Portage” and I’ve done it one time. We single portages that time. It’s relatively easy and flat as I remember. But if you plan on a lot of gear I would not do this one. 2 miles first trip, 2 miles back, 2 miles second trip. Oh dang I forgot the fishing rods leaning up against the tree. So 2 miles back, then 2 miles back. We took the first campsite available that day on the other side.

My daughter worked at menogyn on bearskin lake. I’ve done many trips in this area, most of them including this portage. It’s long but easy. As mentioned you want to single portage this one otherwise it’s a very long day of walking. The lakes east of rose are gems, definitely worth the effort. I’ll add that the menogyn kids use this portage frequently, often carrying wood/canvas canoes. My daughter carried my 68 pound Peterborough the entire portage without taking a break

I would agree - very easy 2 miles.

When I was at Menogyn, we always called it the Baby Grand. It wasn't until I was an adult that I noticed it marked on maps as Long Portage. As people have mentioned, it is very flat and easy footing. Parts of it have been flooded by beaver dams in recent times, but it is still a very straight forward portage. Don't let the length intimidate you. But also make sure you don't overpack and keep your gear consolidated. Hate to discover you left a water bottle at the start after you get to the end.

My 9 year old did it last July.

There was a short (50 yards?) flooded section that we hopped back in the canoe for but,we probably could've just walked through it too.
