My kid and I are taking a last minute road trip to Ely. TONIGHT. If weather cooperates there's a chance to see the Aurora, albeit a slight one. Looking for any tips for short-ish hikes or drive-up spots for potential night sky viewing. Echo Trail maybe? Dark areas, scenic areas, etc. Never been to Ely so lay it on me! Also a nice morning hike opportunity? Self permits? Place to grab a bite to eat in the morning?

Thanks!

Check out Kawishiwi Falls just past Winton on the Fernberg Road.

Bass lake trail and the falls. Google it for a map, maybe 3 miles up the Echo Trail.
There are some longer hikes up the Trail also, but not with short loops.
Grand Lodge Ely and Stoney Ridge for breakfast.

The public launch on Shagawa and Ed Shave Lake on the Echo are some good locations to view the lights. That’s what the women from Root River Photography who specializes in them told me. Have fun!

Thanks folks!

Fun whirlwind trip completed door to door from St. Paul to Ely and back in 23 hours.

Did not see the aurora,, too cloudy. But it was pretty fun exploring the echo trail after midnight

This morning we did the blackstone/secret/ennis loop off moose lake road. Very enjoyable hike with a good amount of elevation change and fun creeks to ford.

We’ve always gone from the east side, but Ely is a special little spot. We’ll be back!

Greg Ash took this at 3 am this morning from Eagles Nest 3. This picture that Greg took was shamelessly poached from Spaceweather.com...check it otu!

Oh man. We didn’t make it to 3am. My kid and I were both totally bushed by 1am or so. And our cell reception wasn’t good enough to get updated forecasts to even see that we should’ve stuck it out. Oh well. Next time!

Yogi yeah we stayed at VNO and they were great.
