I am looking at late May for walleye or lakers on this lake which I can't pronounce. Anyone have suggestions? It sounds like a deep lake for trout.

I fished Gijikiki close to 15 years ago. When I went as a 14 year-old, my dad and I both caught Rock Bass (by accident; we were not aware that rock bass were present in the lake). We spent limited time trolling and hooked into a few fish that we battled but never got to see. Gotta assume they were Lakers as we were fishing deep with big, shiny spoons. No walleye for us. Good luck!

I was told years ago that the Lakers were so thick on Gijikiki that you can walk across their backs. I have tried twice with absolutely no luck. I will say that the weather was less than desirable both days we fished there. Good Luck.

Spent a couple of glorious, very enjoyable days there last May. And, while I had
some good fishing elsewhere (Amoeber, Sema et al) I didn't do too well on Gijikiki.

Two boats trolled extensively on a cold day shortly after ice out. No fish to be found. The island campsite looks really nice, but was occupied when we visited. The one we stayed at on the north shore was a damp hole in the woods. The portage from Ottertrack is very steep and tiring. I'm glad to have seen such a beautiful area, but I am not likely to brave that climb again anytime soon.

That portage is definitely a challenge. The water immediately in front of the portage entrance is very good fishing. My old man and I caught numerous pike, smally, and even a couple 'eyes in just an hour or so before we portaged to Gijikiki. All of those fish were caught while we were casting from near to shore (we had waded in about shin-deep). It was beautiful fishing because we got to see almost every fish strike (we didn't see the 2 walleyes strike).

Wow, reading through these comments they describe my exact experience 3 years ago on Gijikiki. We went late may as well (Memorial day week). The portage was tough, but well worth it. When we entered the BWCA it was 70 degrees with snow still on the ground in some places. We camped on Giji at the island site for 3 nights. Site was really nice except for the widow maker tree that hung over the entire campsite. Hopefully they chopped that down. Night one the weather changed to cold and rainy. We had a break in rain night 2 and fished hard. My buddy got into a big laker and fought it for over 10 min and ended up losing it at the side of the canoe bringing it in. It was heart breaking. We didn't get into any more lakers the rest of the time there and ended up getting stuck on shore due to rain/ wind until we left. If you end up here, make sure to take a trip up to lake of the clouds. Good luck!

Spent a memorable night on Gijikiki when it rained six inches. I am not sure I want to reveal this, but if you can hack the portage you might want to try Lake of the Clouds, which is right next door. It is not much bigger than a pond and reputedly 100 feet deep. It has been a long time since I was last there, but it was full of trout, not monsters, but decent sized. We would just troll around in a circle and get a fish with each lap. Good luck!

I am amazed at all the great comments and helpful suggestions. Thank you everyone so much. I am 67 so the portage may change our minds. Looking forward getting away from the cell phone for a few days and I will report back on the results.
