I bought a 5.5 ft. Two piece Ugly Stick Carbon spinning rod this weekend. I’m not a fan of the look of this rod or handle design, but it seems to have a nice balance and feel — it came with an Abu Garcia reel.

Wondering what others think of the Ugly Stick Carbon. Is this rod worth the money? Is it more durable than other 24 ton graphite rods? Would you buy it?

That was my question as well. 5 1/2 is pretty short for most fishing done in the BW. If you’re using it for panfish elsewhere, it may serve you well. That being said, I’ve never used that particular Ugly Stick model, so can’t speak to its performance or value.

5.5 is way too short of a rod for me. I can’t even think of a fishing situation where it would be helpful. Maybe ultralight? I suggest you take it back and get at least a 7’ long rod.

This is a light action rod for some trout stream fishing I plan to do next weekend on the Bad Axe river in SW WI. Price was $99 with the reel included. I won’t take this rod to canoe country. I’m just interested to hear what others think about the new Ugly Stick, which doesn’t feel or look like other Uglies.

The price point on it is around what you can spend on any number of decent rods, including some 4 piece travel rods.

Ok, I can see how this rod would work for this. Probably tight short casts, trees everywhere so this is a viable option. Sorry I thought you wanted this for the BWCA fish out of a canoe.

I was wondering about those rods as well, so I thought I'd take a look at the replies. There weren't any, though. That must have been disappointing. You did a good job of not firing back. Jeez, guys.
They seem like decent rods to me, but I've never used one.
Good luck fishing.

Well, he asked for me advice and I gave my honest advice. I’m not going to suggest a rod for someone to take to the BWCA if I would not buy it myself. I’m sure a pocket fisherman would catch a fish too, but I’m not going to suggest that either. I told him my thoughts and made a better suggestion for him. Then he told me that he was not going to use it in the BWCA and told me of his thoughts. I then apologized and responded again with more helpful advice. This is a BWCA site and I will not suggest anyone gotta 5’ 6” rod for anyone.

I should probably explain the "decent rods" comment. Any rod that you drop $80 on is going to be of decent quality, but how well it works for you is going to come down to design details, your preferences, and how well the rod allows you to fish the way you like to fish... The $80 price point is too high for me, for that line of rods. I don't like the grips, and I know that graphite specs are pretty non-standardized, but berkeley (same parent company) lightning rods are also made of 24 ton, and they're less than half the price. The Ugly does feel good in comparison (the guides are nicer, too) but at the store I didn't think it felt twice as good.

As far as short rods and trouting go, I don't think I've ever wished the 6'6" I use for stream fishing was shorter, but I live in southeast MN where there are high cut banks all over so the extra reach is frequently useful. I also fly fish some of the time, so a "short rod" for me is anything below 8'.
