Well over 1/3rd of the posts in my Listening Point feed today were Guess that Lake, Guess that Waterfall, or What Would You Do series-type posts. I, for one, am not interested. Can we create separate groups for these instead of clogging up the standard forums?

No. This is what happens in winter months. There are groups for fishing or trip reports etc. This tread is for general random stuff which is all the fun games are included.

Don’t click what you don’t want to read? I mean, that’s what I do anyway. Especially if you already know what the contents will be.

No worries... It will end soon. Sort of dragging on this year, like this wintery spring weather. Seems to me that Guess the Lake used to be an ice-in to ice-out activity. Or, 100 lakes... whichever came first.

Just post a lake that you know no one will ever guess... or just don't ever confirm its correct.

These threads usually start about in December and end about now. They are in the correct forum. General Discussion is a forum for just about everything including off topic. I for one enjoy seeing all the different lakes. I might see a lake and say, I need to go here. Along with the main topic discussion threads there are 60 more to subscribe to below. Every topic under the sun is covered here, except politics. People just can’t play nice so that’s banned.

I’ve been thoroughly sick of them too for a few weeks. To much of a good thing I guess.

I had same thought that "games" could be in their own forum.

There were a lot of spin-offs this year. I was wondering when someone would start the “Name That Latrine” contest.

I think it’s in the right place, but think we should stop playing April 1st or when it reaches 100. Time to start talking paddling again.

Wow. I didn't know such an innocent activity could cause such heartburn. Do these threads offend? Do they create harmful divisiveness?

Everywhere I go somebody inevitably wines and cries because of others activities. Does it have to happen here? Where can we go to escape and have some harmless fun that MAY ALSO be edifying?

Apparently no where.

Clogging up a canoe website with posts and pictures of lakes we canoe to........wait.....what?
We need to stick to meat and potatoes, serious things like 70 posts on whether to use 4mm or 5mm cord to tie out our tarps.
To click or not to click.....rough day.
Yee-hah!

+1

Guess what color underwear I'm wearing? Guess whose car is parked at Entry Point X? Guess what direction I'm paddling?

Let's pull the plug on these threads...

04/27/2021 08:54PM
I do see how they are getting to be a little worn out, but what's stopping you from scrolling past and contributing to threads that have content you want to see? Yeah you might have to hit page 2 or 3 to find more stuff because the games clutter up the list, but it's not like the people posting the game threads are holding out on you, holding back more interesting matters for discuss.

It's a fair observation, but the content you want to see and participate in is still there even if there are threads about naming that lake, or what would you do, etc. You just have to look a tiny bit longer for it. *shrug*

I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if some folks decided to plan a trip that included lakes from the name that lake game. There were some awesome photos and excellent descriptions of the lake, campsites, portages in and out and difficulty.

I get tired of reading about some stuff too so I just scroll on past.

If you’re so knowledgeable please feel free to start a few enlightening threads so we can all broaden our minds.

+1 on the games, including quetico

Nothing wrong with it, but does cause endless scrolling and paging for those not interested. Why have separate forums for anything.
Coupled with the changes in site mechanics where the "new post" function doesn't work like it use and no way to mark all threads read, these games just add a lot of clutter.

This is exactly it for me. I don't participate in the guess, but if there is a good picture of a lake that looks interesting, I do like finding where it is and marking it down for a future trip.

A fair number of the "guess this lake" photos are as informative as a night shot.

Eventually you will realize that people here will argue over what color shoe lace is most in accordance with LNT principles. Ironically, most of these arguments help bind us together as a community.

As someone who posted a "Guess the Waterfall" picture a few weeks back, I apologize. Thought it was appropriate. My bad.

If you're not interested, why can't you just not click on the subject? Is scrolling one page of posts to find things you're interested in just too tough? As I type this, there have been 113 posts about the Northern Illinois Wing Night. I don't live in Illinois, and the subject does not interest me. So I move on to other posts that do. I, and others, have managed to do that for the years we've been part of this community. Might want to give it a try.

The irony is we have now created a longish thread about subject matter which we want to limit the subject of. I can’t word it any different. :)

clogging up the standard forum , and make a separate group CMTFU !
then you'd be saying why is there a separate special group for these lake naming things.
it's real easy to just keep scrolling.

When its is time for movement, I hope the breeze is up and I get the upwind location. At least, not much reason for reservations in this case. Privacy at the privy could be an issue for those who value that.

This is not a photoshopped picture.
Due to the increase in reservations this year, this is what they are doing to handle the crowds on the popular Lakes.

Complaining about threads where people are having fun and participating and communicating and learning?

Here's a thought. Every thread (politics and bickering aside) that gets multiple posts is good for this community. Traffic is a good thing, this is a website not the wilderness.

113 posts in one thread, not hundreds if threads. Big difference. Why not do away with all forums? Just scrolling.

It's a pandemic year. Some people are looking for any sort of entertainment or socialization they can get. Other people are getting a bit grouchy and letting little things bother them. Now is not the time to make changes to the site that might push people away, especially when the guessing games are usually wrapping up about now.

Let's take a breath and not start anything right now. If it is still an issue next year, maybe then we can address it.

It can't be that hard to simply pass over what you don't want to read or be a part of. Removing less desirable content to another location wouldn't increase the content you want. How many more categories do we need?

Aglet? I had to look that definition up. Of course, the best aglet would depend on the material used for the shoelace (cotton, synthetic, leather, etc), wouldn't it? :-)

05/04/2021 10:57AM
great scrabble word

I just learned that word because our dog started to chew the aglets off our shoe laces and we didn't know what to call them.
