My wife and I are going up the Granite River from Gunflint Lake - up to Sag - over to Red Rock - down to Alpine - and out by way of Seagull, nine days...middle of July. Guided here 45 years ago, but am a novice fisherman. Want to fish with lures only (no live bait). Recommendations for lures? Thanks!

PS: Don't really intend to do much trolling, but mostly want to fish in the evenings after setting up camp. While I'd mentioned being a novice fisherman, I did catch a few walleyes in the BWCA back in the day - and would not mind catching a few more!

I would generally recommend some type of Senko when fishing in July. Fish tend to go to shaded areas around this time, so anything that you can rig weed less would be good. Top water baits to throw around in those weedy, shady areas will also get some action from bass. Some fish tend to stay down low too in the cooler waters so if you are able to find any deep diver this would work. I'm not totally familiar with the lakes you are going on but judge the water clarity and if it looks foggy and hard to see through, find some baits that make a little noise or have brighter colors. Depending on where you plan to fish, use those baits. I would also recommend some sort of SSR (shallow shad rap) which is a little more basic to use for a novice and never seems to let me down! The fish in the boundary waters can be moody when they want so play around until you find a bite.

Make sure you fish places like Horseshoe rapids on the Granite!!!!
