Was curious if anyone happens to have the Guardian Purifier from MSR? I have a pretty good dividend with REI and was thinking about pulling the trigger on this purifier. It's a bit overkill for BWCA but would be great for my western hunting expeditions. Overall has pretty solid reviews but like everything, I've seen some reviews that keep me second guessing about spending $350....

All feedback is appreciated and if you have any recommendations I'm all ears.

It is still a pump filter. We go with Platypus systems. You can find 6 litre gravity systems on sale for $69. Work great, easily back flushed and can't be any easier to use.

Are you limiting your selection to pump filters due to their compact, lightweight, quick-to-deploy-on-the-run qualities? Numerous responses here, including my own, will sing the joys of the set-it-and-forget-it properties of gravity filters, unless you ask specifically for pump filter reviews.... (We own both 4- and 6-liter Platypi.)

i have the msr microfilter miniworks.

besides the filters all freeze and crack .its still going. glacial/tea colored water where the silts always churning. that plugs up the ceramics and require you to save some water and rinse. i don't know i am smart enough to keep the hollow fill fibers backwashed and cleaned. but the pump side, they are strong. your choice or what i have, is the way to go around here, with our muddy water. i think you need to have a pre settling out pot. to keep it going.

The Guardian pump works great and is faster than other pumps I’ve tried. I really like the backflush and pre filter that screens out any floaties. There’s nothing to really clean or maintenance in the field. I always feel like I have to get water away from shore with a gravity filter. Another advantage is the integrity test that’s really easy to do. It’s still a pump and is a small workout to get water for the group. It’s my preferred filter for double portage trips, but a gravity setup is considerably lighter if you’re counting ounces. I think my gravity setup is about 15 oz lighter than the filter with water bags, etc. It’s also ridiculously expensive. I waited until I could get a discount. A couple years ago, I did have a problem with a leak that I think was my fault due to damage to the body. MSR fixed it for $10.
