Hi, was looking into camping on Omega lake. Would like to go check out Phalanx and Finn lake while staying on Omega. Does anyone know what the portages are like from Omega to Phalanx and Phalanx to Finn?

Thanks

Nick

My wife and I stayed on Omega approx 5 years ago. We are fairly seasoned wilderness travelers. We paddled the end of that bay on Omega for a good while looking for the Phalanx portage. We never found it. We never got out of the canoe to bushwhack or anything like that but there was no obvious sign of that portage from the water. If you go there and find the portage then please report back. Hopefully someone else on here has a more successful report.

Thanks for the info HangLoose! I was kinda speculating that it may be a bush wack to Phalanx and again to Finn. I read a while back that Finn was a pretty neat lake. Really wanting to go see it.

About 20 years ago a friend and I were also interested in getting to Finn. We did find the portages but they had not been maintained in a while.

We went in there maybe 7 or 8 years ago. I don't remember the portages being too hard to find, but they obviously didn't see a lot of use. If I remember right the portage out of omega started by basicly walking up a small seasonal creek/runoff

I was in there in May 2009. The portages at that time were pretty grown over but still manageable. As I recall, the portage to Phalanx was very near the northwest corner of Omega. At the very west end of Finn there was a logging road with a culvert that bisected the lake when the area was logged in the early 1960s. The attached pictures are from a 1964 issue of Naturalist magazine. Finn is a very pretty little lake, worth a visit. The logging road was removed from the lake but you could see where the road came down to the lakeshore.

Here is a picture coming out of Finn into Phalanx. Sorry to link away from the forum, but I don't think I have this photo anywhere else.
