Headed back to the BWCA, it has been a long time since I was there in high school. Taking hammocks with for my son and I. Question is, does anyone take a backup tent with just in case you cant find a hanging spot or is that not really a concern.

We are going out of EP30, paddling through the burn area and planning to be out of it up on Fire Lake or around there.

Thanks for any advice!

As long as it is just you and your son, I have always found a place to hang, at least where the tent pads are. The only time I have had a problem is with a group of three other tents that took all the available tent pads.

Push north to Fire or onward to the north half of Insula and you’ll have zero issues.

Yeah, it is going to be us plus 4 others. So 2 tents. Hopefully all the good sites aren’t taken.

Thanks! Our plan is to cut up out of the burn zone as soon as we can and do the smaller lakes. Goal is Fire or the northern part of Hudson. Would love to get to Insula but with 3 kids and their first time in BWCA I dont want to push them too hard.

I have thought about this when I was in my hammock. What would happen if my hammock ripped, or if there was no trees in the area to hang from. My bug net goes around the entire hammock and underquilt. So if needed I could sleep on the ground, use my underquilt as a sleeping pad. Then rig my bug net up and set my tarp up above me. If you don’t have a wrap around bug net I guess you could just wear a bug net on your head and spray DEET on arms. I would say no on a back up tent because you have everything you need to sleep on the ground with your hammock gear.

I always thought that if I was in a burn area without trees that there would be plenty of dead trees around to fabricate some sort of hammock stand.
