First I need to thank so many of you. I have read a TON of posts on here with plenty of good advice. Especially regarding smallmouth fishing in the evenings in August. I know that we will be targeting those.
Boy Scout group coming up for our first trip-5 days.
Our fishing experience is limited-mostly bugs on hooks.
Our tackle is limited-we are asked to pack light so all portages are accomplished in one trip and we portage often so many of us are bringing "pack rods" and limited tackle.
The intent of the trip is adventure-not fishing (only 1/2 of us fish)-we are likely to only have time for fishing around late afternoon and then again around 7:30 PM maybe 4 days or so.
None of us have fished with jigs before or at least the way that I read you guys do for Walleye and Pike--is it worth learning and a good way to spend limited time on the water in August or would we be better off using Beetle spins, spoons, top water Raps and husky jerks and casting near weed beds and structure that we find--mostly going for Pike and Smallmouth
Or would be better off not bothering with jigs and work a slip bobber and Yum leeches?
Would we be foolish to shore fish at 7:30 at night and later instead of using the canoe?
Would you guys recommend the F9 J9 SR7 silver black colors and sizes for this time of year? What about Perch? is 1 or 2 of each of these enough per fisherman? (we will probably bring Tiny Torpedos too)
Any craw stick baits and tube colors recommendations are welcome/
If we choose to jig fish should we just go with chartreuse heads and tails? maybe only 1/4 oz weights if tackle space is tight? Any other colors and weight thoughts welcome.
If we want to try Husky Jerks-should we even consider the deep ones? (or is it not worth the space)-color and size thoughts for August also welcome
Do you have panfish advice? Colors sizes for lures plastics are helpful
I know this is alot--thankyou in advance for any advice that we get.

What is your entry point? What lakes do you plan on fishing?

I’ve taken a lot of scouts to the BWCA. Others have on this board as well. There is also a Scouters forum on this site if you have questions from a scouting perspective.

From my experience I’d focus on an assortment of spoons for pike. After that, twister tails and jigs. Others here will have some tips. Less is more. No tackle boxes! We usually carry no more than a day pack of fishing stuff.

Think through how you will land fish. Catching a hook in the hand is the biggest safety risk.

Your best chance for a fish meal is pike or bass. Google how to clean pike. They are bony. But, they are delicious when cleaned properly to remove bones.

Thanks for taking young people “up north”!!!

If you have a campsite near deeper water -like, you can't see the bottom within a cast's length from shore-you'll do great and have fun fishing from shore with your beetle spins, etc. Bring live leeches and fish them under slip bobbers. Simple to bring in and super effective.

If fishing from canoe, I like to find rocky points and moving water for August fishing. You can usually find bass hanging out in those spots. Usually casting crank baits toward shore and the bass will snag within first few seconds. For points, I like to sit directly off the point and cast on either side. Sometimes the bass are hiding in the leeward side. You can make a lightweight canoe anchor with a basketball net and rope, just fill with rocks.

For pike, I usually find those trolling around the lake and will catch at multiple depths with different types of lures.

Thankyou All--this is great advice--we will be starting in Farm lake--our guide ("interpreter") will help us plan the trip when we get there.

If you guys have advice on what size spoons to throw--we would be happy catching 20-24"pike we don't need to find any monsters.

I can see us casting more than trolling if that makes a difference.

Especially if you have kids along you might consider taking pliers and crimping down the barbs. On a 15 day Quetico trip we only lost one fish due to that (barbless hooks are mandatory there.) One embedded hook could ruin your whole trip.
