The rescue thread reminded me to share this short doc on the history of the de Havilland Beaver. I've only had the pleasure once but the sound of that engine is something you can definitely feel. Knowing a little more about the history of these unique planes has me looking for the next opportunity to splurge on a ride into the woods, and I hope not to need one on the way out before I'm ready to go.

deerfoot: "The distinctive radial engine sound of the Beaver is the sound of the Canadian bush."
Deerfoot and I have about 75-80 Beaver flights between us, out of Mattice Lake Outfitters in Armstrong, most while we worked with the Wabakimi Project from 2006-2018. Waiting at the airbase was always a time filled with eager anticipation... Are we next? Oh we have to wait for three more flights to come in? Then it was our flight. We'd cart our stuff down the dock , help them load the plane and choose our seats. Shut the doors and on with the seatbelts, a quickey safety talk while she was pushed out and idled, then on with the earmuffs and off we'd go. Rumbling down the lake and then we'd leap into the air. A sharp right turn and we're headed into the bush. Some flights were almost and hour when we headed up to the Albany River.
After our week or two in the bush the plane would return and we'd watch it land on the lake before we'd paddle up to it to welcome and unload the new team into the canoes off the pontoon. We'd load the plane with the stuff going out and hop in for the return flight.
There's a nice one minute video of one of the Beavers landing on Slim Lake in 2007 on the Friends of Wabakimi Face-buk page in the videos section.

When I was 12 years old I got to fly into this lake on Norseman. When My son was 12 I took him to the same lake and we flew on a Beaver. It was as memorable for my son as it was for me when I was 12. Not sure how much longer they will be flying.

A great Quetico trip began with DeHavilland Beaver flights from Ely's Shagawa Lake to Sand Point Lake, then Sand Point Lake to LLC. The Beaver was a 1952 model (one year younger than us), tail number C-FHAN. Flying over BWCA/Q lakes, bogs, critter trails, and portages was a preview of a wonderful trip.
