So we have always used and love the first need purifier for our water filtering needs. About 12 or 15 years ago we discovered MSR SweetWater SiltStopper Prefilter can make the first need filter last 7 or 8 trips by just replacing the prefilter. Unfortunately they discontinued the MSR SweetWater SiltStopper Prefilter replacement filter. Well I just figured out you can use maple syrup polyester filter material and cut it down to size, wrap it 2 times and it works just as well. Not only that but the maple syrup filter is washable and reusable. So you will actually save money compared to buying a new filter every trip (3 were $12). Also, the filter material filters out the same microns as the original prefilters.

Thanks for the tip Canoearoo. I bought up all of the filter elements I could find when they did that (REI had them seriously discounted) and haven't run out yet, but good to know there is a decent option out there when I do.

I used to put these on my MSR water filter. They were pretty good for a per filter. Too bad they discontinued them.

If you need to replace the in line Pre-filter itself I found a filter that will work. When you clog it up you just unscrew the bottom and replace it with a maple filter.

Another thing I just remembered about those filters. They get all brown and plugged after a while. Just remove the pre filter and peal off the dirty part to expose a new white part and you can get more life out of it.

Yup! But once you run out of those pre-filters you can make your own that are reusable.

An aside -
I have a Sweetwater filter that hasn't been used for years. It has virus stopper, new in package filter, new in package siltstopper (3 filters).

This must be an old unit - it doens't have MSR's name anywhere. The instruction sheet has a 1998 revision date.

Happy to have it go to someone who will use it (or the parts). Cover the shipping and it can be yours.
