Watched a video recently on the Garmin castable depth finder. Called the Garmin Striker it is a compact, lightweight castable depth finder . Looks like a very viable unit for use on the BWCAW.
Dial up the Garmin site to get information.

I saw one in action yesterday. It had a very good picture of the underwater weeds and rocks. We only tried it out over the side of the boat on Vermillion for a few Minutes so not sure of battery life. It showed the fish in symbols on the graph. You just toss it over the side, and look at your cell phone for the display. I think it could be a valuable tool to get depth and incoming fish to your lure if you are anchored.

When they find a way to keep the transducer reading properly while trolling slowly, I might be interested. This transducer design looks better than the others I've seen but I'm still skeptical.

I’ve not used the garmin version but have used the deeper fish finder. The deeper works well but I have had some connectivity issues at times so not sure I would recommend, but mine is an older version that is Bluetooth. I believe the newer ones work on WiFi. One trick I have found that works great when trolling is to float the fish finder in a ziploc bag with a little water and set it on the bottom of the canoe. It works through the hull, as long as not placed over thicker areas that have foam reinforcing. When in stern I put it under or just behind my seat.

If you buy one let me know how it works as the battery is wearing out on mine and I will be looking to replace soon and the garmins are cheaper than the Deepers.

I have one of the older Deeper units and have been using it for Quetico trips for 6 years. It works well for mapping bottom contours.

I was having problems with the battery and contacted Deeper about replacing or upgrading the battery. They said it was not possible without compromising the waterproof seal. They offered to sell me a new unit and gave me a 35% discount code.

My new Deeper Chirp arrived today. It is supposed to to have better battery life, faster charging and use less phone battery (WiFi instead of Bluetooth). It is also higher resolution and definition.

I won't have a chance to test it until next week.
