JN: "Victory! I spent several frustrating hours in my yard trying to accomplish a legal hang before our trip. I was very pleased to accomplish a good hang in camp. Anyone else have pics of their bear hang success?
"
I cannot tell - is that an alice pack? I've hung a few of those loaded. Nice hang.
Time in the woods leaves no time for carving and drawing. Carving and drawing leaves no time for getting lost in the woods. I really need to retire.

OMGosh that's up there. I, for the life of me, cannot get a string over a branch that high."
I'm wondering if Cowdoc uses a crossbow with string spool, like those folks who climb the coastal redwoods...."
I used a little zipper bag my wife sewed. Fill it with a few rocks and attach it to the end of the line. You can get it pretty high. Just watch it that you don't bean yourself or a friend with it...because my aim is horrible.
But yeah...cowdoc's is something impressive.

cowdoc: "I use a Kong Classic dog toy.....the one with the hole down the middle. Its hard rubber, fairly safe, throws nice, fish rope through hole to tie......works great."
I'll be danged! Cool idea. Our hound loves those things; she would probably try to run up the tree...
I've been using an Ursac for small amts food solo, and tying off to a tree away from camp, but I guess that doesn't cut it, with the new regs. Not to take the thread down that road, though, as the OP requested... No reason I see that an Ursack couldn't be hung, also.

They did modify the Order so you can use an Ursack.

Island site on Cummings?"
Good eye! Yes, the NE island site"
I recognize it because when we stayed at that site I spent a large amount of time trying to remove a dangling rope someone had gotten stuck on that very same branch. I’m disappointed to say I failed but did report it to a couple of Rangers I met on the lake.

yep, tree sap sometimes won't let go of cordage and so we have dangling rope here and there in campsites. I've only succeeded in taking one down out of the 5 or 6 seen.
JN, you keep a neat camp. Congrats on the model hang. Wondering if you used a special knot for an easy takedown.

Yes! I find it hard to enjoy the peacefulness in a messy camp!
No special knot. For the first rope with the pulley, I actually tie two different types of rope together. For the end that gets tossed up over the branch, I have a piece of slick paracord (550 cord...whatever it's called), and the other end is a thicker piece of more conventional rope. The paracord slips over bark MUCH better, and the regular rope is easier to tie to the tree (paracord is so slick it tends to be a pain to knot). The second rope that is run through the pulley and has the pack hung from it is more of the same "regular" rope. I pull it tight to an anchor tree and wrap it around several times. Wrapped around the tree this way, the bag will hang even without the rope being knotted. I usually tie a loose knot of some sort just to be sure.
If that makes any sense... It worked pretty well this week on a 4 day trip.

This photo always cracks me up. Years ago we found a previous occupant's rope stuck in a tree and these are the lengths we resorted to in getting it down. And, yes, we brought along a pool floatie that trip. Two, in fact

I was so determined to get it down that I even tied another length of rope to the stuck one and paddled out on lake with it to try to get a better angle. I really hated looking at it and leaving it!

I busted out my bear rope and pulley bag this weekend to pull out a concrete anchored fence post that had broken off. My neighbor didn’t have a clue what I was doing and thought we were going up the tree. Worked amazingly well and popped it right out! My family was even amazingly surprised that it worked so well and that I thought to use it.
Key thing was I had a tree nearby enough to make the system even work.

Brilliant.

HAHAHA. The fella commencing to climb the tree cracks me up. His body language is determined. Hate to sound like an old geezer (since I am!) but it's risky stuff to monkey up a tree so tall and straight. Don't get me wrong....I loved climbing trees at one point in my life but straight up like that I could not do.
How far up did he get? So cool you guys tried!

Amazingly, we did manage to get the rope down! The guy climbing the tree made it up to that branch on the left (staying right by the trunk, of course) and the paddle people brought the end of the rope over to him and he was able to pull it down the rest of the way. The tree had a lot of knots and tilted "in" a bit so it wasn't quite as treacherous as it appears. Somehow it's already been 20 years since this picture was taken and I'm sure we'd be much more wary of attempting something like that now!
