ELY – A sunny sky, cool temperatures and west winds greeted participants and their fans at the 2021 Ely Marathon races last weekend that returned after a year off in 2020 because of the coronavirus.
“We were really happy with the turnout,” said organizer Wendy Lindsay. “We had lots more registrations than previous years. Race day went great and people were having a great time.”
The premier event of this distance-running celebration at the end of the road, the Ely Full Marathon (26.2 miles) Portage Division, took center stage again this year. The 2019 winner, Anthony Peter, 41, of Mounds View, broke his own course record. He finished in 4:23.20, shattering his old record of 5:00.01. Peter won a custom Northstar canoe for his efforts.

I carried my Northstar ADK (pack boat) in the black gold layup (I think that’s what they call it). That was a last minute change of plans as I was planning to carry my Northwind Solo, but I opted for the shorter ADK as the winds were forecasted to be in the 10-15 mph range by the end of the race. The NW Solo is actually much more comfortable to carry as the gunwales are narrower due to the tumblehome and the thwart bar is in a better position for gripping, so it was really a tough decision for me. Both of those boats weigh about the same, the ADK might be a pound lighter as it weighs in at 25 lbs. I’m glad I ran with the ADK as there were some crosswinds at times that made it really hard to run, and stay straight. It was a great day and it was awesome to see so many people out on the course supporting the runners.

Congrats on your win, Tony! The best I have ever run was a half marathon. I cant imagine running a full one with a canoe on my shoulders! That’s something special right there!
