Thinking about using 5 gal. buckets with gamma Lids. Most of the retailers I see, including the a-place...I see the reviews are trashing them. Everyone says that they have used these for years but the ones you buy now are very thin, ill-fitting and crack and break. Anyone know a reliable source for the older better ones?

Not sure about your stores out in Vermont. Here in Minnesota I buy them at Fleet Farm. You can also buy them online. Mine are going on 15 years and still don’t leak. They have not changed. Many companies copy so Buy direct from HERE

What section do you find them in Fleet Farm? Hardware, storage bins? I've looked and haven't seen them, but that store is maddening sometimes with where they put stuff. I've never seen them at Menards either.

I’ve seen them back in the store where the horse stuff was.

The lid works well as a serving tray during Happy Hour.
"
LOL. Big Marshmallow.
Blackdogyak, save your money and invest in a proper bear keg. It's the stuff of future regulations/requirement, I presume. At least it seems so to me according to those recent BWCA successful bear camp raids.

Ha! you're right. Stopped by today and they were back with the horse stuff. Go figure...

I got mine at Lowe's and have had no problems with it. You just have to get the threads lined up properly. I don't think it's thin. Seems rugged to me. I use it as a bucket toilet for car camping (with pine pellets for liquid waste and sawdust for solid). The cover fits so well that I can leave it right in the tent or my car no odor. Amazing. I recommend the Lowe's version.

Forgot to mention that these are used at the nature center where I volunteer on buckets for maple sap collection. They work out well for sustained use during maple syrup season, used by numerous individuals and not always treated well. No problems with any for the last few seasons.
