The park was closed last year after the derecho, but is open now. How would November 13-14 work for anyone interested?
For those not familiar McBride is an IA State Park just north of Iowa City. We camp in the south camping area which is on the lake shore. Primitive sites with toilets, no showers. Set on a slope in an oak grove.

Sorry boys … I haven’t been paying attention to bwca.com threads like I normally do.
I finished the Mississippi River trip to the Gulf on September 21.
I can make McBride Nov 13 and 14 … looking forward to hooking up with you all.

mike2019: "Good memories of Lake McBride during my U of I days 1970-74.
Back then spending a Saturday at Lake McBride would definitely be more fun then watching the football game! Things have changed however.

I see a half dozen hearty souls lined up to hear Wally 13's Tales of the Mississippi. Hearty would be the word. Forecast is high of 40 and down to 29 overnight. We are in a sheltered area from the NW winds, but paddling might be less than optimal.
So what will be the final count? I have the time blocked and can handle the conditions, count on my dutch oven egg bake for breakfast.

I'm still looking forward to it! I plan to bring a pot of chili and hopefully garlic bread for Saturday supper.
If memory serves, the last time we were there, the water was still turned on but was really rusty. Ben have you heard the drinking water status this year?

Have not talked with staff so unsure about water or the great firewood supply we have experienced on past gatherings. I will bring 4 gallons of RO filtered water.
For now watching the weather and looking forward to seeing folks. Sounds like food mostly covered. Breakfast beverages anyone?

I have 4 bundles of firewood left over from an RV camping trip in Indiana this past weekend. I will bring to McBride. Hope there is more wood available at the Park like we had on our last visit. Going to be cool and we will need a nice warm fire upon arrival til bedtime.

The primitive camping area east of the causeway on the south arm of the lake?? I know they're doing some road construction at the main state park double boat ramp area on the other end of the lake.
And yes, right in North Liberty's back yard! Could bike to it from there if that's where you live! haha

I just talked to the ranger at Macbride. He verified the primitive bathroom is open and the water is still turned on. He thought the wood bin was empty though.
I will bring some firewood too... Saturday evening and Sunday morning look to be cold with a chance of snow.
Camping fee is $6.00 at the self-register station.

Yeah, just wrapping up. Which is good for how the forecast sounds for the next few days.
Now if I could figure out this long-haul covid _____ I'd be great. Daily headaches, constant ears ringing, all worse when driving, among many other things. So I'm not doing much till I'm feeling better.....which hopefully is sooner than later. I'm a year and half into this junk

Good to hear you are wrapping up harvest. Hope your harvest was bountiful. Sorry to hear about the after effects of your bout with Covid.
I was an agricultural chemical sales representative for 41 years and retired last June. I really love fall on the farm. I miss riding in combines and talking with farmers about their production plans and visit about what programs worked and what didn’t. I miss waking corn and soybean fields and evaluating population stands, weed control success, disease presence, yields etc. I miss the smell of soil after chisel plowing.
Man … I could go on and on … hope we can hook up sometime.

Paddling and farming...good topics.
I haven't driven a tractor in many years, but can still feel the brisk air and hear the putt putt of the John Deere 70 pulling the plow on a crisp November night. Headlights only good for a few feet. The smell of dirt turning. The Milky Way above.

Just checked Ia City weather, 36 degrees and snow with temps down to 32 and gusty winds coming in when the snow stops, gusts up to 40 mph. I for one am glad I am home just back from a nice hike and ready to sit in front of the fire in the family room.
Looking forward to next year.
