Does anyone have experiences with Vermilion Community College in Ely that they’d like to share? Good? Bad? Big Duckling is a junior and starting to look at colleges and this is on her list of places that she is considering. Looking at a vet tech degree.

We’re planning on a vacation to Ely this winter and will do the tour thing. Dad loves the idea as a reason to make extra visits to Ely and the BWCA. :)

John and Lynn O'Kane, owners of Voyageur North Outfitters, rent apartments to some of the VCC students during their off-season. They might be a resource for you, and refer you to some students to whom you could talk.

One of the best decisions in my life. Small setting made it possible for further success at college level.

I went to Vermillion 40 years ago. I met lifelong friends. The instructors,
most I never had, have been my friends to this day.
At Vermillion your not a number, your treated as someone who wants
to go forward. Placement rates are excellant.
I went on to be a Wildness Ranger in the Bwca and then a Junior Scientist
in High Energy Physics for the University of Minnesota.
Good luck.

Thanks for all of the positive info. The only person I know that went there was there 20+ years ago and he loved every minute of it.

She wants a small campus in a small town and she loves "up north" so it could be a great fit. She came up with the idea all on her own and started doing some of her own research before she even told us.

Please keep any and all info coming.

TB........ it's been a long time since the last time I saw you at a fall wing night. That would be great if we wear able to coordinate something.

A friend of mine is a faculty member at VCC. We met more that 30 years ago in graduate school, and he has been at VCC for about 20 years. If the other faculty are of the same caliber as my colleague your daughter will be in good hands.

Even though some of my duties involve student recruitment to a large midwestern university (enrollment 30,000+), I know that there is great value for some students in attending a smaller institution. Some students will thrive in a classroom environment with greater individual attention that a community college can provide but cannot be achieved in the large lecture halls of a university. This can be a very good option to complete general education requirements if one plans later to attend a university.

I attended Vermilion. One of the best decisions I ever made. My only warning is that some students chose to never leave Ely. I’m one of them. I’ve lived in Ely 28 years now.

I graduated from VCC in 2012 with a AS in Water Quality Science. I'm incredibly thankful that I made the decision to attend VCC. The education has served me very well, and I met many lifelong friends during my time up there. Great teachers, good people and unbeatable scenery. It's a really unique college experience.

The best teachers I ever had were at our Community College. They are paid to teach and not to do research and write books like professors at large schools.

She'll have no problem finding a boyfriend, there were hardly any girls when I went there.

And another vote for the Water Treatment program. I haven't had to worry about employment ever since graduating.

Finding a boyfriend might not be a good selling point to a dad ! ;)

AVMA accredited program, which means she can sit for the board exam (VTNE) to become licensed as a veterinary technician. Although the profession demands as much as counterpart professions in human health care , the pay is low in comparison. She will have no issue finding employment.

FYI, Vermillion, along with the other NHED colleges (Mesabi, Hibbing, Rainy River, and Itasca) are merging into "Minnesota North College" -- effective next fall. This won't really change the on campus experience / specific programs at each of the individual colleges .... just FYI as you'll see a name change at some point.

Thanks for asking the questions and for all the answers. I've wondered about that school for one or two of my kids. Would love an excuse to connect with Ely!!
