On the light side of topics; What the heck is going on? No, I am not losing it more than ever before. At least twice, once by Canadian Agnes and once on Rose lake on the far west campsite.

Laying in the tent both times, we both heard what sounded like humans talking for about five seconds, maybe 50-100 yards off. Actually fairly clear audible. The nearest campsite both time is like two miles away.

If it was just me, maybe you could say I was dreaming, but both of us heard it. Yes, I went outside and looked and that was the end of it, nothing around that I observed, then I went back to bed. Kind of spooky for a second.

I have zero idea what went on. Strange and unexplainable things in this wilderness world.

Anybody have something similar?

Reminds me of the movie Sneakers when the Robert Redford character describes what he heard while in the truck of a car as chatter at a cocktail party when it was actually a bunch of geese. Maybe something similar for you?

Could be but it was so distinct and clear.
I have heard many animals make weird sounds over the years from bobcats-crows etc., completely different.

FUNNY, but not sometimes.... i hear this in my house.
the people that lived in the house before us, well.... he killed himself on the property while on the phone with his son. yes, grisly stuff. i guess he wasn't quite all there in the end.

anyway, i hear hushed conversations and often see shadows where there should be none. a few times i've woken myself up hollering because i feel someone/thing holding my feet together at the ankles so i can't move. i only see a shape until i holler and wake up.

I've not had this experience, or at least that I know of. All voices after dark I believe I can account for.

Is it possible someone was out on the water where the lake narrows to the west-northwest? People stay out past dark more often than we think.

Absolutely not. This was coming from the woods and like I said there was no one within 2 miles.

Second possibility: it was the campsite or the other campers you mention, and atmospherics combined with geography made their voices sound as if they were coming from a different direction.

Third possibility: someone on the portage from Duncan?

Fourth possibility: it remains an unsolved mystery and we discuss it on the bulletin board.

I have listened to many stories about "visitors" and have a few of my own. Were they speaking a language you understood? And could you get a sense of the topic? More than one voice is less common, interesting.
And while seeing is believing, sometimes you can believe what you hear.

Years ago we were on the Wawiag River when we heard splashing and a baby crying. We were almost correct as it turned out to be a moose calf struggling to climb a steep and slippery slope up out of the river. It kept sliding back into the water and would let out a cry that sounded just like a human baby. The mom moose came jogging back to the river, looked at the calf, looked at us, looked at the calf again and that motivated the calf to stop whining and climb that slippery slope. It's too bad it happened so quickly we were unable to get any photos.

Maybe this has nothing to do with the sounds you heard, but sometimes, late at night, the small waves hitting the shore rocks make a 'glooping' sound, almost like people talking. I've been fooled more than once. And as mentioned before, Canadian geese can sound so much like people chatting, playing, etc.

(I am not going to read this thread again before my next solo!)

I have no idea why we heard what we heard. Often wondered with all the radio waves from transmitters, would it be possible for somehow nature or rock formation turns those waves back into words-voice just like a receiver or phone would. Maybe for a second or two? We need are local physicist to answer that?

From a science paper:
Many metal objects around the house can pick up radio signals. Everything from the coils in your bed frame to tin foil can receive them. Though the signals are going through them, however, it's not often that they are amplified enough to be audible.

But if you are close enough to an antenna the electromagnetic field can be strong enough to oscillate at the frequency of the transmitter. If it vibrates strongly enough, as metal parts within the base of the fan appear to have, it can make a noise loud enough for you to hear.

During WWII, Allied troops were known to use similar methods (intentionally) in order to listen to the radio whilst in Italy. German forces could detect local oscillators (a part within a radio used to select frequencies), so they made their own radios using metals such as razor blades, nails, and pencil lead as detectors.

I have not heard this while out in the bush, but I'll keep it in mind on my next solo...thanks for that. So intriguing.
I have heard whispering while working in my studio. It's usually just quiet enough that I can't make it out. One afternoon, I heard what I thought was my wife walking down the hallway to the bathroom, which is right outside my studio door. I thought, "well she's home early". I got up to look and there was no one else in the house.
This is just a couple incidences from 35 years of often frequent phenomenon that we have experienced here.

Hushed conversations, shadows, and holding your ankles is only the beginning...wait till the shadows take human shape and wave at you. ;)

This may not be what is being described, here, but I have heard voices when fishing near rapids. One part of me takes this as auditory illusion (or auditory pareidolia, if you want a fancy term); the other part says it is voices from the rapids...

I get terrified watching scary movies so I couldn’t deal with the nighttime ankle holding! While both my husband and I have heard hushed whispers in the car or relatives house, I think I would have to find a new house if I was you!
Friendly spirits are fine, but those that terrify me in the night couldn’t be tolerated.

We’ve heard odd noises in the BWCA but thankfully no voices.

Have had a few instances where stuff in my house just felt weird/off from the normal day to day routine.
I say out loud with a stern voice.
You are scaring me and the kids please leave us alone.
If you want to talk to me please chose a different time and place.
The dog is usually on alert wile this is happening , when he calmes down I know that what I said worked. But I have never had that feeling when by myself.
I built cell towers for 22 years, couple of my crew said they here voices wile climbing this one tower. Could be like explained like what pinetree said about signals being caught by tower and resonating into a actual phone call. But.... after the fact we found out there was a crew there before us and there was a fatality on site really makes you think twice at what was actually herd.

Mooseplumbs please try what I said and kindly say out loud
Please leave me alone, you are scaring me, I want you to leave.

Just to throw this in, they just may be real human voices you hear during the night. It may be very unusual, but there are some that trek at night. Why? For an increase of adventure, night navigation and pace count training with or without the use of technology. Usually ex-military personnel that miss their prior experiences. or current military personnel. No one said you can't hike at night. Or a phenomenon, time travelers, or mark one for the unknown. One thing for certain, all these possibilies keep us sharp and grants us stories when coming out of the bush. :)

I’ve heard what were voices 3-4 times in the middle of the night and so have some of my camp mates. Sometimes the voice was clear, but it has been many years and I can’t remember what it was saying.

I have always attributed to some sound phenomena or an animal making a noise and the way it bounced off the trees and rocks made it sound like a human voice. I’ve heard the explanation of waves hitting the shore or waterfall sounds as well being heard as human.

One time I got up and tried to pin point the sound but I couldn’t. Seemed like it moved as I moved. I was on a peninsula and I attributed it to waves.

What did the voices say on Agnes?

Hearing Voices. I only did a quick search but apparently 15% of people hear voices where there aren’t any. They can interpret sounds as voices it has to do with how their brain processes sounds differently. Obviously the extreme end is schizophrenia but most people it just occurs rarely and doesn’t cause any issues. Additionally they have a unique ability to be able to hear actual hidden speech sounds within a regular sound that the majority of people cannot hear…

So those of us that hear voices are we hearing stuff others can’t or are our brains making it up…LOL

The human brain is wired to see faces and hear voices. It is pretty well documented that people will tend to see a face in just about anything that has 2 indents that are even remotely similar to eyes in placement or a profile that resembles a nose. Hearing voices is the same thing. Hearing and seeing other people is something programed into our caveman brains. A false alarm is way better than not noticing an intruder.

Animals are even more tuned in to noise so when your dog's ears perk up and he/she/it looks in a direct location, I'd be paying attention

Yes I agree, but in my case their was two of us heard the same thing. Like I said I have zero explanation why we heard what we heard. The one time we were in Quetico-at spring ice out and the first people on the portages that year. There was no other canoe person probably within 10 miles.

Here is a weird phenomena in this world and wonder like I mentioned before could rock formations cause the same>

Dr. Sam WinterFAMILY AND COSMETIC DENTISTRY, VANCOUVER BC

Can people really pick up radio waves on their braces or fillings?
Do you wear metal braces or have metal fillings in your teeth? The closer you are to a large AM transmitter, the more likely you are to hear music in your mouth.

When AM transmitters were common in big cities, it was an everyday occurrence for people living near them to hear the station on their toasters, from their light bulbs, and even from things like a metal spoon resting in a metal cup. If you’re picking up radio, your dentist can change the size of the filling or the length of wire in your braces to solve the problem.

Now you just got to experiment to get the right setup. Maybe a new filling -toaster combination
