I resolve to take a nice BWCA trip. Circumstances have not allowed it for a few years. My oldest daughter said she would go with me. You would think since I am retired it would be easy to take trips but it hasn't helped.

Hopefully I'll get to go in 2022.

Family circumstances have limited my paddling for years, but this coming summer, I resolve to paddle and fish some local lakes. They're full of big fish and they're so close, so I can go and return in a day and I will. This I resolve.

Well - I've got the usual lose 10-15 lbs. I plan to paddle local rivers again, brook trout fish, pick agates and mix in a trip to the BW.

Fish in my alumicraft fishing boat every week.
Target shoot at the range I belong to with 9mm and .308 every week.
Grill every chance I get.
Get to the BWCA at least one trip to fish.
Did I mention I want to fish more?

Lose 4.6 lbs.
Wear new socks

Frequently remind friends and family that they are loved and appreciated.
Do weekly hikes and/or mountain bike rides.
Work on upper-body conditioning so I can to continue to single-walk portages.

Play on some via ferratas in the Dolomites.

Return to Canada. Haven’t been there since June 2019. For 13 years I made 1, 2 or 3 separate paddling trips to Canada each season.

That's specific. I have both Googled and Bing-ed things that weight 4.6 pounds hoping to divine how you landed on that number.

I guess resolutions are meant to be personal.

Several people that I've chatted with about our upcoming move have said something similar. Are you familiar with that area? I'll take any fishing tips about that area if you're knowledgeable about that subject and willing to share.

Take my 3 kids on a week long canoe trip. We’ve only done long weekends due to their ages(10, 8 and 5), but I think we’re ready for a week long trip.

Take a BWCA overnight hiking trip with my wife on either the Sioux Hustler trail or the Pow Wow.

Take an October solo trip deep into the heart of the park and maybe stay in a PMA.

Paddle some lakes and streams in my new neighborhood (recently moved).

They say resolutions should be specific. When I lose that 4.6 lbs., I'll weigh the same as I did a week ago ;).

We've been in the Brevard/Pisgah Forest area (about 40 minutes south of Asheville) since the early '70s. Sorry, I don't fish, so can't offer much there, except to say there's an active Trout Unlimited chapter in the area. Hiking and mountain biking I can help with...

At the start of each year I go through all my clothes, all my outdoor gear, pretty much everything that is not my wife's. If I have not used it, worn it, camped with it, or shot it in the last year it goes.

Maybe we could meet somewhere for a hike once we are settled in.. I'm not an experienced hiker, but I've spent plenty of time outdoors and in good physical condition. Would love to make as many new friends as possible.

Checking back after 12 months... I had a great year but I did not accomplish what I had resolved to achieve. Perhaps 2023 is my year of achievement.

I usually go through clothes in the spring and fall when I switch the closet over. We never seem to get rid of camping gear, just accumulate it. But that can be a good thing. Last summer we took 2 newbies who did not have all the gear the needed, but we had extra that they used. And a coworkers son needed a pack for Boy Scouts, so we gave him an old youth pack that was perfect for him.

After 15 years to the BWCA I realized that several of the guys borrowed my camping gear every year. My wife said that needed to end. So I sold off all the camping gear but my personal stuff and what I used for the grandkids. Then sent the guys that borrow my stuff every year links to gear on Amazon and told them they would have to buy their own gear this year.

My hammocks were coming back with rips in them. Tent came back neeting to be swept out. And the platypus bags would be dirty with hoses that clearly had fallen in the dirt.

I was okay with loaning out gear for the first year for those that did not know what to bring. But after five or more years. . .they are just being cheap and taking advantage of other people's gear.

The other thing I did was down size and lighten up my personal gear. Got rid of the heavy stuff and paid the extra money for truly lightweight and compact gear.

I’m not anti-resolutions… I’m more of the mindset/approach of stacking good days on top of good days, good years on top of good years, etc. So, for 2023, I plan to continue to work hard, stay disciplined in the aspects of life that are important to me, be kind to friends and strangers alike, and do the best that I’m capable of doing every day. Fairly basic and simple approach. Dry even. But it works for me.
