Great report. I love your dog! Back in 2017 I stumbled across this exact same area by chance and I have been back there 3 times since. Gaskin is a great lake for base camping also. The whole package is perfect - Grand Marais, Trail Center, Poplar Haus, Rockwood, and the Gunflint Trail.

Thanks for writing a report. Great area. I stayed at the site across from yours earlier that summer on my first solo trip. Sorry to hear about you breaking your femur while skiing. That can't have been fun, but hopefully you'll be up for a trip in 2022.

Nice trip. If getting a comfortable nights sleep is a challenge for you, you might try hammock camping. I was introduced to it a year ago and it has been a real game changer. There is a steep learning curve and in general you’ll want to buy high quality set ups from one of the many small companies (Warbonnet, Dutchware, etc) rather than cheap knockoffs from Amazon and REI but the reward for most is the most comfortable nights rest you’ve had in years. Good gear hung correctly and used properly is much different than backyard set ups you may have used.
If you’re curious there is a “hanging” forum on this site and fellow BWCA supporter named Shug has many great You Tube videos on hammocks and hammock camping.
My wife used to think I was crazy to do all the research and buy all the gear but now she can’t wait to sleep on her cloud each night.

Great report and photos. Thanks for sharing.
Rockwood is great and the area around Lizz is my favorite have made a few trips to that area covering different ground.
The most memorable was an early May trip days after ice out where I only saw 2 people but saw moose and wolves.

Thank you for sharing this report! I have a trip planned that includes leaving from Nebraska, bunking at Rockwood, and using entry point 47. Maybe the fishing will be better in late May than in August.
I also recommend hammock camping! It takes some research to understand what are worthwhile products and how to use them, but the sleep is so nice!

Beautiful pictures. It looks like a nice area. I was worried the fires had devastated more of that area, but it looks like those lakes were not affected. We used the weather report to cut out early from a BLM park last year too. The thought of staying through a big storm and packing up in the rain the last day didn't sound like fun. We were glad we got out when we did as a huge storm chased us all the way home and we saw lots of wind damage on the news for that area. Being able to get a good weather report with the InReach has been helpful in deciding how to pivot and decide whether to move closer to an exit or stay further in and relax.

Spartan2: "I enjoyed your report. NIce photos. This is an area we have enjoyed in the past and it was fun to "visit" there again. Thanks for sharing. I hope you get to go again in 2022."
Thanks for your comments, your stories have been my husband and I's inspiration. We went to Cherokee on our first trip because of you.
