The post of Sven and Ole's not only has me craving some local pizza here in town, but also got me thinking. I'm doing all this trip planning with focus on the paddling, campsites, fishing, sights, etc. and I am overlooking another part of the trip, the road trip north.
When I travel, I like to support local and find a nice little gem of a place to find friendly people, good food and a quality beer. Does anyone know of a locally owned place in Duluth that is one not to miss? We will be stopping in Duluth for one night in June on our way up from Ohio before we head to Ely.

I’m sure there are more nuanced Duluth minds here, but I can think of a few spots:
- Sammy’s pizza is kind of the local institution. There’s a woodfire place in canal park called Vitta that we enjoyed.
- New Scenic cafe is something very different, but really incredible for the foodies
- fitgers brewpub is always a classic

+1.
I'll add Anchor Bar in Superior for a high-cal cheese burger, Northern SmokeHaus in Canal Park for sandwiches, meats, or fish, and if a bit further north Castle Danger has a nice tap room in Two Harbors.

I will second Northern SmokeHaus for Lunch. even if we don't stay in Duluth we try to plan a stop there for lunch on the way through.
Also second the OMC Smoke House and Bent Paddle Brewery. Both are awesome.
I asked a similar question a few years ago with some great responses, with the link below. We spent several hours walking around Lake Superior and all of the shops near there. Watching the Aerial Bridge operate and then a trip to Minnesota point. We stopped by Hawk Point on our way out the next day, 100% worth the stop for the views of Duluth and the Lake Superior, if you have time.
Must see in Duluth

It's funny how I never try any of these places out even though I spend time in Duluth once or twice a year. I always stay with a tripping buddy who lives in Hermantown and usually just eat in. Maybe next time we'll have to get out and try something new.

I agree, The Breeze Inn has great burgers!!"
Briar...as in Briar Lake? We almost bought a place there some years back...like 10-15.

Ursa Minor has good wood-fired pizza and beer.
YOU MUST have dessert at Love Creamery, the one in West Duluth. Best ice cream I've had. Totally legit locavore values.
For breakfast, it's either Uncle Louie's or Duluth Grill.
The best food in town is at At Sarah's Table.
The Pickwick is very cool. An institution. Worth it just for the easy parking, but don't skip the onion rings.

Good Saturday Morning To Everyone
Thank for so many replies with suggestions we will certainly consider. I have my planning notebook open and making a list. I will then do my research and plan accordingly for the time we will have while there. My apologies for resurrecting a question from years past. I get laser focused on something and forget to utilize the search function. I truly am thankful for this forum and the people of this community.

Thanks for the points of interest as well. Anytime I have gone north I always wanted to stop in Duluth but you know how it goes when you are on a mission to get somewhere. I keep on truckin and don’t look back. Cheers!

Not the lake, my dog's name is Briar.

Jaywalker: "Duluth is a wonderful and very genuine city. Anyone passing through eager to paddle is missing something. "
Well said. We never miss an opportunity for a layover stay in Duluth - coming or going. I've been gently dropping hints about moving there for a decade but my wife is not convinced she would enjoy the weather for half the year.

PeaceFrog: "I’m pretty sure Duluth grill is a go for breakfast the next morning before heading to Ely. Still working on the choice for supper when we get into Duluth. Anyone ever been to the casino in town?"
I'd avoid the casino...it's a bit sketch.
Duluth Grill for breakfast is solid. Dinner i'd do Canal Park Brewery, good food and apps, with a fantastic selection of beers.

Thanks for the heads up on the casino Speckled. Curious though...sketch how if I may ask.
Canal Park Brewery is on the list
