Two kayaks spotted on Basswood Lake between the west side of US Point and Canada, 6/7/2021. It looked like they had a set of portage wheels which I assume they used coming up from Fall Lake over portages where those are allowed. I am posting this because there have been several questions in various forums lately regarding using kayaks in the BW.

What’s the current MN limit on rods in use per fishing license open water? It was 1 rod per license until 2018 or so, last time I checked, but I believe there was legislation introduced in 2019 to increase to two.

Good lord, that's a LONG ways to lug around a 70-90 pound YAK around.

Page 29 of the regs say you can only use 1 line in open water and 2 during ice fishing (excluding some border waters where you can use 2 lines in open water). It doesn't look like he has any lines out though - maybe but hard to tell. The angle of the rods is far from ideal for trolling if he does have a line out.

We saw two Sit-On-Top kayaks each rigged with four rods way up on Basswood Lake."

Cool story

Yeah I see nothing wrong here. Those rod holders are adjustable, if he was trolling they’d be parallel to the water. I use the holders on my boat the same way to store rods when I’m not fishing.

He could get up there without a single manual portage so I don’t think it’s that wild. I wouldn’t want to portage one of those boats but basswood seems like a great place to bring a fishing kayak. As long as he doesn’t have a pedal drive or anything mechanical he should be fine up there around US point.

He's not fishing with any of those; they are just being stored in the holders. You can have a bunch of rods (luckily for me) but only fish one at a time.

Calm down everyone. This is how it’s done on a fishing kayak. When you fish you only use one at a time.

Welp. One of them has portage wheels, so I'm guessing they're lugging those things across portages. They also look like they're packed for an overnighter or two; so they'll be pulling them up to the campsites as well. :)

Indeed! The OP edited the title, post content, and added the second photo with the portage wheels after my post. :)

Buddy and I did 6 days last spring with kayaks. Yes they are heavy. No we didnt use any portage wheels. We carried them together and took multiple trips on our portages. We only had a few short portages. It was grueling, but we decided it was worth it to have our our fishing kayaks. We are going again this year.

As to the rod/fishing quantity. Many fishing kayaks have vertical rod holders like that. So it may look like he has 3-4 rods in use, but they are just stored.
